2018 Uganda Social Media Conference

Democracy and Civic Engagement in the New Age of Civic Engagement

On June 28, the fourth edition of Uganda’s largest Social Media Conference was convened at Mackinnon Suites. 400 guests, speakers and exhibitors gathered to take part in a discourse on digital (dis) information and its impact on democratic processes. This year, a new multifaceted format was adopted with three parallel workshop sessions which were followed by insightful speeches, panel discussions and various debates.

IPI World Congress in Abuja: Why Good Journalism Matters

In late June, Abuja, Nigeria’s political and media capital, was the host city of the annual International Press Institute World Congress bringing together over 200 editors, media executives and top journalists from the global network whose mission it is to defend media freedom and uphold the highest standards of journalism. This year’s conference theme was “Why Good Journalism Matters: Quality Media for Strong Societies”.

KAS Media Program at the 15th Frankfurt Media Law Days

The media situation in the countries of East and South East Europe were the central topic of the 15th Frankfurt Media Law Days. The event was hosted by Viadrina European University and Southeast Europe Association with the support of the Media Program South East Europe of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS). Prof. Dr. Johannes Weberling was the chairperson of the expert conference.

KAS and WRO Support Reconciliation in Ninawah

Workshops on Conflict Resolution and Mediator Trainings in Bashiqa

Ninawah region in Iraq has always been ethnically, culturally and religiously diverse. However, the region has suffered severely from the occupation of ISIL in 2014. Diverse communities have been torn apart, with the build-up of significant mistrust leading to more ethnic and religious conflicts. In this context, the KAS Syria/Iraq Office, together with the Women Rehabilitation Organisation (WRO), launched a ten-month program in Bashiqa, Ninawah province, which aims to enhance awareness, enforce community participation and stimulate peaceful co-existence in the region.

Iraq Leadership Fellows: Class of 2017/2018 Completes Training

KAS and IRIS hold final Advocacy Training for young Iraqi leaders

Given the complicated social and political landscape in Iraq – especially considering the divide between Iraqi-Kurdistan and Central Iraq – it is essential to thoroughly train the future generation of Iraqi leaders. This includes gaining the ability of working together along the lines of different ethnic and religious affiliations. In cooperation with the Institute for Regional and International Studies at the American University of Sulaymaniyah, and the GPD Charitable Trust, the KAS Syria/Iraq Office held the third and final training of the Iraq Leadership Fellows Program (ILF).

Balancing Urban Development and Heritage Protection

Experiences from Singapore

Singapore is transforming itself into a smart and sustainable city. Its concepts and efforts in urban planning, green development and resource management have made it an outstanding among metropolitan cities in the world. How does the city state strike a balance between development and heritage conservation while utilizing natural resources in a sustainable manner? KAS RECAP, Georgia State University and ICOMOS invited law students, professors, urban planners and NGO representatives to participate in a one-week study trip in Singapore and explore how the country addresses urban challenges.
