This research, undertaken by KAS Media Africa research assistant Johannes Wolf, seeks to discover the major frames highlighted by opinion leaders featured in the East African media during the initial coronavirus period.

In March 2020, Covid-19 arrived in East Africa, with Uganda and Kenya acting quickly to close borders and lock down their populations to curb the spread of the virus. The public turned to the traditional media to try to make sense of the new dangers and restrictions. Opinion pieces, commentary and editorials in the major daily newspapers particularly set the tone of discussions, focusing attention and debate around certain key themes.
