Numerous cases of violations and abuse of human rights had been reported in the post-independence history of Nigeria, with a huge surge especially during the military rules. In 1999 Nigeria returned back to democracy, but the cases of human rights abuse and violations continued unabated. Many Nigerians as well as international observers have raised objections and pointed how these abuses and violations undermine the rule of law, peaceful co-existence of citizens and economic development of the nation. In a bid to strengthen the House Committee on Human Rights, stakeholders from the human rights sector will be brought together with the members of the committee to discuss and share their expert views and opinions on current violations and abuses, and offer recommendations. Amongst topics to be presented are: International and Regional Human Rights Conventions, Protocols and Instruments; Ratification and Domestication of International Conventions and Protocols on Human Rights in Nigeria; Overview of Human Rights Based Bills under Consideration in the National Assembly and Actions for the Committee on Human Rights; Legislative Oversight of Human Rights: Practical Measures to Enhance Effectiveness; A Review of Human Rights Violations in Nigeria; and Strengthening Human-Rights based Security Agencies and Oversight in Nigeria among others. The seminar is part of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s support to rule of law, democracy and good governance in Nigeria.
