The space under study represents qualities of a new social and geographical environment that requires the development of particular methods of enhancing knowledge on social and political processes occurring here in the context of spatial planning, as well as monitoring those changes in the social and humanitarian environment.

“The new region” represents a group of states most frequently, and imprecisely, known as “post-Soviet”. These countries are taking part in diverging processes of integration which determine new boundaries of this region, at the same time confirming its existence vis-à-vis regional approaches to resolving socio-political problems which could be solved only within the boundaries of the whole region but not separate nation-states. In the framework of the concept of “the new region of Europe”, the research of economic, legal and political processes here become extremely important. At the same time this social space has a history of distinctive cultural and civil practices that create the most important foundations of political and social processes.

The quality of human geographical and local environments determines, in turn, trans-border and regional processes. The development of modern regional systems and the opportunity to study the specific nature of mobility processes (social or political, economic transformations and cultural evolution) in the Baltic-Black Sea region of Europe represent unique sources of knowledge about trends of the development of modern social systems.

The program of the conference presupposes presentations and discussions within a plenary session, the round table discussion “The Intermarum: a space for life and partnership”, and four thematic panels:

• Integration and trans-border relationships in the Baltic-Black Sea region;
• Energy security in the Baltic-Black Sea region;
• Regional policy in the states of the Baltic-Black Sea region;
• Cosmopolitan Europe: memory policy, migratory processes and transformation of citizenship institute in the states of the Baltic-Black Sea region.

Russian and English (with simultaneous interpreting)

Researchers, politicians and experts from all EU countries and Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Moldova.

Application Procedure:

Application through call for participants was closed on July 7, 2010. Conference participants were invited to send an application form, abstract of 250 words (max.) and curriculum vitae by e-mail to: intl.conference@ehu.lt.

Notification of accepted applications: July 20, 2010.

Papers that conform to the publication rules will be subsequently printed in the conference publication.

Deadline for submitting full texts: October 15, 2010.

General rules for the full paper publication:

• Paper length should not be more than 40,000 printed characters (including references, graphics and tables)
• MS Word; font – Times New Roman; font size – 14; line spacing – 1.5; field width – 2; per-page footnotes.

No registration fee

Conference organizers will cover costs for participants’ accommodation and meals.

European Humanities University will assist participants in obtaining visas.
