KAS Transatlantic Conference 2016

From June 17th through 23rd, 2016 25 high-ranking officials and experts from the European Union and the United States convened at the KAS Academy in Cadenabbia, Italy for the 4th annual KAS Transatlantic Conference: “Global Crisis and Opportunity - Transatlantic Responses to Innovation and Transformation”. This conference was jointly organized by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung offices in Brussels and Washington, D.C.

The Five Presidents’ Report of June 2015 and other works on the future of the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) call for improved governance and more coordination in fiscal issues. Further integration in these areas is complex from an economic and as well as legal point of view and politically extremely sensitive, given that fiscal policy is considered as task of the member states. This workshop will serve as a platform to discuss and advance these essential topics for the completion of EMU.

Nur zwei Tage nach dem Ende des NATO Gipfels in Warschau, der bereits im Vorfeld als wegweisend und historisch bezeichnet wurde, lud das Europabüro der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung gemeinsam mit der Hanns-Seidl-Stiftung und de Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies am Dienstag, den 12. Juli 2016, zu einer Diskussionsveranstaltung zum Thema: „Der NATO-Gipfel in Warschau und die Konsequenzen für die Europäische Sicherheit“ ein. Neben den Ergebnissen des Gipfels, wurde die neue NATO-Strategie, die NATO-EU Beziehung und insbesondere die Rolle Deutschlands thematisiert.

Gemeinsam mit der Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) lud das Europabüro der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung zu einem Expertengespräch ein, um mit einem ausgewählten Fachpublikum die bevorstehenden Präsidentschaftswahlen in den USA und die damit verbundenen Auswirkungen auf Europa zu besprechen. Mit Fokus auf die künftige Ausprägung der transatlantischen Beziehungen wurden Modelle und Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten diskutiert, die in Abhängigkeit des neuen Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten stehen.

The European Office in Brussels had the honor to have the Archbishop of Lahore, Msgr. Sebastian Shaw, as a guest and speaker for a breakfast briefing. He enlightened the audience with a historical background about Christians living in Pakistan and proposed suggestions how the institutions of the European Union could play a more significant role in Pakistan in order to improve the current situation of Pakistani Christians. The Excellency was accompanied by Mark von Riedemann and Marcela Szymanski, two representatives of our partner organization Aid to the Church in Need.

Der Bankensektor ist mit existentiellen Problemen konfrontiert: mangelndes Wachstum, komplizierte Regulierungsmaßnahmen und steigende Konkurrenz. Ein Grund der aktuellen „Bankenkrise“ ist eine statische Herangehensweise mit mangelnder Bürgernähe. Es wird eine zu komplizierte Sprache gesprochen, die für den Kunden nicht mehr verständlich ist. Dieser fühlt sich somit im Stich gelassen. Im Zuge des Ausbruchs der Finanzkrise im Jahr 2008 und der Rettung von Großbanken durch staatliche Rettungsprogramme, wurde offenbar, dass die Problematik des „too-big-to-fail“ existiert.

EU-ETS-Reform auf dem Prüfstand

wie können Europas industrielle Zukunft und die Vorreiterrolle beim Klimaschutz gestärkt werden?

Europa braucht eine starke und moderne Industrie – daran besteht kein Zweifel. Daher muss nicht nur das 20%-Klimaziel, sondern auch das 20%-Industrieziel forciert werden. Der Ankündigung der Europäischen Institutionen, den Anteil der Industrie an der gesamtwirtschaftlichen EU-Wertschöpfung auf 20 % steigern zu wollen, müssen deshalb Taten folgen. Zu der Veranstaltung mit dem Titel: „EU-ETS-Reform auf dem Prüfstand – wie können Europas industrielle Zukunft und die Vorreiterrolle beim Klimaschutz gestärkt werden?“ luden der BDI und das Europabüro der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung ein.
