The War in Ukraine: Regional and Global Fallouts

On 23 May, NIAS Europe Studies, in collaboration with Kristu Jayanti College and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, India, organized a one-day national workshop on the theme “The war in Ukraine: Regional and global fallouts,” at Kristu Jayanti College, Bangalore. The workshop was divided into three sessions, and participants across India presented on diverse topics such as the strategies of the US, Rus-sia, Europe, China, and the UN on the war in Ukraine. Presenters also focused on key issues, such as energy and the impact of sanctions. Fol-lowed by the presentation, each ses-sion was debated by discussants from the NIAS Europe Studies team and Kristu Jayanti College.

Sedition in India- Origins, Challenges and Reputational Costs

Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code which criminalises sedition is a contentious provision. The debates around it are manifold and range from questions to its present utility, an ambiguous definitions clause and its increasing invocation by the government in derogation of its interpretation by the Supreme Court. In a recent plea filed by the Editors Guild of India, the constitutionality of the provision has been challenged in the Supreme Court which has led to renewed debate about its current place in the Indian legal system.

Regionalwahlen in Indien: eine Nachlese

Schwappt die Modi-Welle weiter ungebremst über die Republik?

Die diesjährigen indischen Regionalwahlen in den fünf Bundesstaaten Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur und Goa gelten unter Kennern der indischen Politlandschaft als das Halbfinale der für das Jahr 2024 anstehenden Parlamentswahlen. In diesen nahezu zweimonatigen Regionalwahlen dürfen über 180 Millionen Wähler – dreimal so viele wie alle Wahlberechtigten in Deutschland - darüber entscheiden, wer die lokalen Regierungen stellen wird. Den Hauptpreis der Regionalwahlen stellt der Bundesstaat Uttar Pradesh dar, mit etwa 200 Millionen Einwohnern der bevölkerungsreichste Indiens. In Uttar Pradesh leben einige der ärmsten Bevölkerungsgruppen des Landes, angesichts seiner Größe hält der Bundesstaat jedoch erfahrungsgemäß den Schlüssel zur Macht in Neu-Delhi in den Händen.

Opportunities for a more Inclusive Indian Foreign Policy

New and emerging challenges, from the uncertainties caused by climate change to the cascading effects of the ongoing pandemic, call for alterations in traditional approaches to decision making. Voices need to be heard from diverse skill sets, backgrounds, expertise and lived experiences. A more inclusive foreign policy lens recognises the emerging threats to a nation and global relationships with an approach that is both progressive and realistic. With these issues in mind the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung India Office in cooperation with the Kubernein Initiative, brought forward a report exploring: "Opportunities for a more Inclusive Indian Foreign Policy."
