Plural Ideas of Justice: Stories, Narratives and Experiences from India

This two-day workshop, held on 23rd and 24th of April 2021, sought to explore the ideas of justice that emerged from different and diverse mechanisms of conflict resolution. While the quest to develop a concrete and definite form of justice will keep societies forever engaged, this workshop was successful in its attempt to bring together stories, narratives, oral histories and analysis that reveal people’s experiences with an ‘idea of justice’.

Justice Adda- KAS Plural Ideas of Justice Stories, Narratives and Experiences from India

The conference was a joint initiative between Justice Adda and the India Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), bringing together scholars from different disciplines to discuss legal pluralism as seen in different parts of India and the ideas of justice that can be derived therein. Since the research on this topic has been scattered throughout different time periods as well as various disciplines, this conference aimed to bridge the gap between real-world discourses in legal pluralism and the existing literature.

Conclave on Free Trade Post Pandemic: National vs Rationale

While the current focus of the policy-makers is on battling the second wave of COVID-19, it is the need of the hour to come to a prognosis of what a post novel coronavirus world may look like for the industry and masses. The pandemic has undoubtedly added momentum to arguments of economic developments, trade, foreign policy and even multilateralism. Hence, it is imperative to temper optimism with pragmatism, acknowledge the opportunities and challenges, and identify actionable measures. These reform initiatives will provide an impetus to the government and industry thought-leadership to work in partnership for the nation to begin talking about the forgotten idea of a 'Five-Trillion Dollar Economy' all over again. To have a robust discussion on these issues, the Madras Management Association, Chennai in partnership with the India Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung organized a hybrid conclave on the topic "Free trade post-pandemic: Rationale vs. National" on Saturday, 17th April 2021.

Ensuring Deterrence along the India-China LAC: The Way Ahead

The events of 2020 mark a watershed moment for Sino-Indian relations, with India reevaluating its strategic posture vis-à-vis China. Reorienting the country's military posture remains a crucial aspect of deterring future Chinese aggression along the border. Though the past few decades have seen various CBMs and border agreements holding the peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), events like the Galwan clash and Op Snow Leopard reflect the inadequacy of past agreements, and the urgent need to bolster India's conventional deterrence against China's military. In order to hear the views on these themes from the personages who have been there and done that and more, the Institute of Chinese Studies & the India Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) organized an interactive webinar on the topic "Ensuring Deterrence along the India-China LAC" on 7th April 2021.

Bangladesh- The Vietnam of South Asia- Leveraging the Learnings For India

Bangladesh - A country that began as a case study for development, is now on top of the global GDP charts. GDP growth in 2019 was an enviable 8.4% - twice that of India’s during that year – and is one of the few countries to have maintained a positive growth rate during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is a proud moment for Bangladesh – and the Indian sub-continent. Just as Vietnam amazed the world with its fast-paced growth, so too with Bangladesh which has displayed a will to grow despite the odds. Vietnam instituted market and economic reforms, known as Doi Moi, which enabled it to achieve rapid economic growth and industrialization especially in the fields of textiles & garments to mobiles & electronics. Bangladesh followed a similar strategy which is directly connected with the textiles and garments industry which accounts for 80% of the country’s exports. Bangladesh also enjoys preferential trade treatments with the European Union, Canada, Australia, and Japan with negligible or zero tax. The European Union accounts for 24% of Bangladesh’s total trade. Therefore, in order to examine areas of trade & economics, supply chain & connectivity, geopolitics and soft power further; the Gateway House, Mumbai & the India Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) organized a virtual webcast on "Bangladesh: The Vietnam of South Asia - Leveraging the Learnings for India" on 18th March 2021 to find answers to questions such as: - What can India, South Asia and the world learn from Bangladesh’s successful development trajectory? - How can trade increase between India and Bangladesh for the overall benefit of the region? How can the two economies complement each other? - How can India establish itself in the global manufacturing supply chain like Bangladesh and Vietnam? - How will the tussle between US-China, India-China, Quad-China affect other Asian countries in the region? Will they choose sides? How will they manage their relationships with conflicting powers? - How can the cultural relationship and soft power between India and Bangladesh be capitalized in the economic front?

Realignments in West Asia

The geopolitics of West Asia has seen a dramatic transformation in the recent times. The Gulf States led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have withdrawn a three-year blockade on Qatar. The new U.S. administration may once again recognize the Iran deal. The Abraham Accords have led Gulf states such as the UAE to recognize Israel. Entangled in the old and new West Asian order is the continuing strife in Syria and Yemen. India recognizes the importance of West Asia. Prime Minister Modi’s Link West policy has seen relations flourishing with the Arab world and Israel. Economically, India is dependent on West Asia for energy and remittances. India imports over 1.4 billion barrels of oil, two-thirds of it from West Asia. Affordable and reliable oil supplies are a precondition for India’s growth and economic well-being. Almost 8 million Indians live and work in the Gulf, and their remittances form an important part of India’s foreign exchange earnings. Any unrest in West Asia also threatens this vital economic engine. Therefore, to discuss the geopolitics, security, and energy dimensions of West Asia. the Gateway House, Mumbai & the India Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) organized a Virtual Webcast on "Realignments in West Asia" on 18th February, 2021.
