As the quality of debate is improving, and the running of the whole the National Assembly is getting more challenging, the capacity of the journalists assigned to the national legislature needs to be strengthened through capacity buildings. Through effective reporting and coverage based on proper understanding of parliamentary procedures, the general public will know and appreciate the core mandates of the legislature i.e. representation, law making and oversight. In order to strengthen the capacity of the press corps, experts, consultants as well as experienced journalists who have served as legislators in the National Assembly will be brought to offer their expert views, opinions and recommendations on ways the reports and coverage of the NASS activities can become better. Amongst topics to be presented are Understanding Powers of the Nigeria Legislature and Role of Media in Promoting Rule of Law; Legislative Practice and Procedure and Media Reporting; The Legislature and Media Relations – Code of Ethics for Journalists; Strategies for Effective Working Relationship with Legislators; Benchmarking Parliamentary Performance – Tips for Media Aides and Reporters; The Role of Media in a Democracy - Promoting Responsible Reporting; and Developing a Communication Strategy for the Nigerian Legislature. The seminar is part of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s support to democracy, rule of law and good governance in Nigeria.
