VISION NIGERIA by KAS – Selected broadcasts for the month of October 2012

With a weekly, one hour airing of “Vision Nigeria” in Enugu, Kaduna and Port Harcourt, there are wide ranges of topics, in relation to the long term development policy issues as well as current political events. In October 2012, KAS and partners will focus on these topics:

ENUGU

Co-ordinator: Gloria Anigala on FRCN Enugu, Coal City (Fridays 1 – 2 pm)

05/10/2012. 52 Years of Political Integration and Development Plans in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges and Prospects. As Nigeria observes her 52nd year of Independence from Britain on October 1st, we debate the issues surrounding economic, social and political development in the country. Dr. Emmanuel Iyidobi, a consultant Orthopaedic at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, an activist and a public affairs analyst will be guest speaker.

12/10/2012. The Current Legislative – Executive Impasse over Budget Approval and Implementation: Implication for National Development. Mr. Ochie Chuma Malachy is a Research Consultant and Political analyst and will be looking at the difference between the executive and legislative arms of government over the slow speed in the implementation of the 2012 Appropriation Act and will examine the impact of this situation on the welfare of Nigerians.

19/10/2012. Revised Plan for the Development of HIV Vaccine by the Federal Government: A Critical Look at Nigeria’s preparedness. Recently, a revised national plan targeting possible development of HIV vaccine came into effect, now it faces financial and administrative challenges. Efforts have been made as the National Agency for Control of Aids (NACA) partners with the US Department of Defence and SI Consulting to bring Nigeria on the global scene as it develops an HIV vaccine. John Ife Ajogwu, a representative from the Enugu State Agency for Control of Aids (SACA) will be guest speaker as we look at the challenges facing us as the country tries to accomplish this remarkable feat, especially with Nigeria’s poor track record of implementation.

22/10/2012. Accessing the National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy and Its Impact in Addressing Flood Disasters and Attendant Threats to Food and Human Security. The floods that devastated parts of the country (Adamawa, Anambra, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nassarawa, Niger etc.) claimed lives and property worth millions of Naira has been attributed not just to natural factors but also to human negligence and laxity on the part of the government., a representative of The Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) will be telling us how NEMA is prepared to address the current flood disaster and alleviate the impact. Is their disaster reduction strategy working?

4/10/2012. Topic: New LG Admin Law in Kaduna State; Funding Issues. Guest Speakers: Barr. Francis Kozah and Austine Galadima

11/10/2012. Topic: Women in the Forthcoming LG Elections in Kaduna State. Guest Speakers: Adejor Abel League of Democratic Women (LEADS), Kaduna and Bako Abdul Usman of Campaign for Democracy (CD).

On the 18th and 25th October 2012, the State Electoral Commission (SIECOM) talks on the LG Elections Guidelines.

PORT HARCOURT

4/10/2012. Topic: 52 Independence Anniversary and the People’s Situation. On October 1st Nigeria gained her independence. This year marks the 52nd Anniversary of the event. But it is not all about the celebrations as most citizens are still disillusioned due to the current state of affairs. Vision Nigeria will examine the Independence celebration from the people’s perspective. Dr. O. Felix, a Public Commentator and Lecturer at the Rivers State Polytechnic will be our Guest speaker.

11/10/2012. Inner Peace as the basis for National Peace. Mr. Kenneth Ajunwa, a Peace Builder from the Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri will be speaking on Vision Nigeria as we explore the possibility of attaining national peace by first being at peace with ourselves.

18/10/2012. Building our Communities for Peace. Living peacefully is a vital option if we want to survive and grow as a nation. Vision Nigeria will try to explore ways to achieve peace in our communities. Ms. Imeba Bob Manuel, a development worker is going to be our guest speaker and will examine the role expected to be undertaken by various stake holders in the communities.
