Journalists and media houses face daunting challenges to perform their duties in Nigeria, and the increasing insecurity has made the situation worse for them to report about conflicts. They are faced with threats to lives and properties, intimidation and denial of access to necessary information. Many times, the data given by journalists are at variance with the ones from government agencies, and this has eroded the confidence of the general public in the media, and the credibility of conflict reports is reduced. In the current situation of increasing insecurity and conflicts in Nigeria, it is necessary to strengthen the capacity of the journalists who cover conflicts. Topics at this training will include the Role of State Institutions and Media in Conflicts; Conflict Roots, Causes and Triggers; Evaluation of Press Releases/Conference and Agency Reports in Conflict Narratives; Conflict Reporting Ethics; Humanitarian and Conflict Laws and Treaties; Fact-Checking Tools for Conflict Reporting; Personal Security of Journalists in Conflict Reporting; Digital Security in Conflict Reporting among other topics. The workshop is part of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s support towards sustaining democracy, governance, and Security Sector Reform in Nigeria.
