The corona crisis has accelerated and accentuated trends that highly affect the security of Northern Europe. During the COVID-19 crisis, the EU has warned against intensified disinformation operations by China and Russia. In the midst of the crisis, the US has announced its intention to leave the Open Skies Treaty, due to Russian failure to comply, in spite of European worries how that will affect security on the continent. Meanwhile, the EU is struggling to deal with the asymmetric shock of the COVID-19 crisis, internal tensions between its members, as well as risks for foreign investments in critical assets. Russia, although hit economically by decreasing crude oil prices as well as the pandemic, is testing the readiness of NATO. An increased Russian naval presence in the North Sea has also been noted.
