Same problem, different crises?

EUROPADIALOG I – Causes and implications of migration

After the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan in 2021, the circumstances for its population have deteriorated rapidly. With the Taliban taking control over the capital city of Kabul, Germany has changed the status of Afghanistan from a safe country of origin (sicheres Herkunftsland) to a region with a high-risk environment, thus enabling easier access to the asylum procedure.

Migration

The situation is reminiscent of 2015, when the German administration was faced with an enormous task of assisting Syrian refugees that were fleeing the civil war.

This dialogue tries to find similarities and differences between both situations. Are the European authorities better equipped to help those in need? Are they faced with the same problems as 2015? Which groups are especially vulnerable? What is the perception in society? Which are the most pressing issues and what might be a solution?

The format of Europadialog connects young adults with speakers to review the topic from different angles. The results will be collected and sent to the offices in Brussels, where they will contribute to the Conference on the future of Europe. The seminar will be held in English and is suitable for young adults up to the age of 28 years.
