The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung is an institution active around the world – that is probably not news to you. But we are expressing this global perspective for the first time by publishing our Annual Report 2010 – Perspectives 2011 in one document in both German and English. This underscores the importance of the international activities of our foundation. This does not mean shifting its programmes to only working on global issues; instead it is recognition that national and international topics are increasingly intertwined, which is proving highly beneficial for our work.

Many developments that are urgent issues at home are also important to our engagement around the world. Conversely, our experience abroad can provide important insights on addressing German problems and issues. A particularly striking example is the global financial crisis, whose consequences are still being felt here in Europe. It puts the focus squarely on one of our most important issues, the Social Market Economy. Environmental and climate problems are further such issues. They have been exacerbated by the nuclear crisis in Japan and the renewed energy security debate. The events in the Arab world and people’s desire for freedom, democracy and justice are big opportunities for intercultural dialogue. We would like to contribute to the development of democratic and rule of law structures as well as social pluralism in the Arab world.

Indeed, the future of democracy is also a German issue. Not because it is under threat here but because finding more and new ways to participate in the democratic decision-making process will increase its acceptance by and attractiveness to the people. As a political foundation, The KAS faces a particular challenge in dealing with the popular protests that are symptomatic for the crisis in the relationship between people and politicians. That is a challenge we have addressed, along with the question of the future of mainstream parties. Lastly, problems with migration and integration, inter-religious and intercultural dialogue, the future of Europe and many other issues have become areas where the foundation increasingly works across departments.

By focusing on current developments and concentrating on a few selected issues through its programme-related activities, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung has been able to achieve outstanding results at a time of reduced financial resources.

Adhering to its „Mission Democracy!” the foundation also mastered numerous tasks and challenges. Space constraints mean we can only document in this annual report a representative selection of the work accomplished. We wholeheartedly thank our staff for working ceaselessly, and in some countries under great peril, towards fulfilling our commitments and common mission. We are also grateful to our many friends and partners, who have supported us with action, advice and encouragement.

From this we derive our commitment to continue our efforts towards democracy and freedom, human rights, rule of law and justice, and never stop in our effort towards securing a humane and secure future.
