Barroso urges in State of Europe speech for comprehensive reforms

José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, urged in Berlin for comprehensive reforms within Europe. He expressed explicitly his appreciation for Germany’s contribution during the crisis, and the given granted financial guarantees by the Germans. In German he said: „Ich möchte Ihnen für Ihren großen Einsatz für unser Europa von Herzen danken.“ Meaning: I would like to thank you from my heart for your strong commitment to our Europe.

Interreligious Dialogue and Civil Society (in German)

The attack on a Coptic church in January and the clashes between Salafists and Copts after the ousting of former President Hosni Mubarak have shown the problems that Egypt faces in the realm of interreligious relations. Invited by the Synod of the Nile, Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Egypt and the KAS Egypt, representatives of all Christian communities met with Muslim dignitaries and German experts to discuss interreligious relations in Egypt.

15 young Palestinians in Berlin are looking for inspiration for their own country

In front of the Ring Center, a shopping mall in Berlin Lichtenberg, Palestinians hand out flyers for the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) to passersby. Two of them hold up pictures of the top candidate, a third one takes a picture, giggling. A punk halts and starts to discuss with the candidate, Danny Freymark. Election campaigning was also part of the program of the 15 Palestinian journalists and media professionals who had been invited by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) to explore Berlin.

Many Questions to Ask

15 Palestinians discover Germany and come up with a plenitude of questions

Is federalism not too expensive? Does the government have an influence over the German media? What does the Bundesrat (Federal Council of Germany) do? Who decides about Germany’s foreign policy? Germany is a country that bears many question marks for the 15 young Palestinian journalists and media professionals, who were invited by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) to come to Berlin and get to know German politics and journalism.

Political Salon: Transition (in German)

While transition, being related to political, social and cultural developments, is different in each country, Egypt can nevertheless benefit from experiences of other countries. The Goethe-Institute Alexandria invited German and Egyptian intellectuals, providing a forum for discussion and exchange of experiences as a stimulus for the socio-political debate in Egypt.

Social Market Economy in Malawi

From 4th to 6th July the KAS organized a discussion forum concerning the social market economy of Malawi. On this occasion, they invited Prof. Dr. Jörg Winterberg from the SRH Hochschule of Heidelberg to give a guest lecture.

Women in Politics (in German)

German-Egyptian Experiences

In July, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Egypt and the Goethe-Institute Cairo invited the German politicians Astrid Wallmann (Member of the state parliament Hessen), Aline Fiedler (Member of the state parliament Sachsen), and Verena Walther (Member of the youth parliament Wiesbaden) to a discussion, in order to exchange experiences with Egyptian young female politicians. The event aimed at showing women different possibilities of participating in politics and at encouraging them to take more political responsibility in post-revolutionary Egypt.

Civic Education for Imams (in German)

KAS Egypt, in cooperation with the Democray and Human Rights Program of Cairo University, has succeeded once again in organizing a workshop "Civic Education for Imams" which seeks to improve the civic education of this influential social group. Issues covered at this workshop were the upheaval in Egypt, the role of civil society in the democratic process and the relationship between citizens and police.
