The Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS)-Malawi in collaboration with the Economics Association of Malawi (ECAMA) and Malawi Economic Justice Network (MEJN) will host the third economic forum seminar on Thursday 11th November 2010 at Malawi Sun Hotel in Blantyre. Then Seminar will start at 17:30 Hrs and finish at 20:00Hrs. The theme for the seminar will be “The role of a strong public service in an economy: Lessons and Opportunities for Malawi.”
From the lessons of our first and second seminar series in this Economic Forum, the third Seminar discussion will explore and analyse:
(a) the basic assumptions that foster the emergence and sustainability of a development-oriented market economy
(b) the institutional setup and public sector orientation that can be considered pre-conditional and supportive to a development-oriented market economy
(c) conditions and contexts (geo-political, socio-economic and historical, etc) that threaten the assumptions and institutional frameworks in (a) and (b) above
(d) critical lessons emerging from the discussion for Malawi as a potentially development-oriented economy.
The main presenter will be Associate Professor Dr. Blessings Chinsinga-a political economy expert from the University of Malawi’s Chancellor College. His paper will be critiqued by a discussant from the Ministry of Development Planning and Cooperation, Dr. Hannock Kumwenda.
Invited to the seminar are over 60 participants including bankers, stock market dealers, university students, Chamber of Commerce representatives, civil society, political party and NGO leaders, newspaper, Bureau of Standards officials, radio and TV analysts, insurance agency representatives, opinion leaders, private citizens and other experts.
