Political Leadership for a New Era: What will Germany’s Next Chapter Look like?

A conversation with the CDU’s international secretary Bertil Wenger on the political challenges of the post-Merkel era

As current chancellor Angela Merkel is set to retire at the federal election in September 2021, the next German government and its chancellor will inherit very complex policy challenges, domestically but especially in the foreign policy arena. KAS’ Regional Programme Australia and the Pacific will organise a virtual roundtable with the CDU’s international secretary Bertil Wenger and representatives of the Australian Liberal Party and New Zealand National Party, on the leadership and policy challenges of the Covid-19 era and Germany’s next chapter.

Since our world was turned upside down by the Covid-19 pandemic, it can seem as if crisis management has become the new political normal, with political leaders forced to make decisions driven by immediate urgency, yet with long‑term socio-economic political, and strategic consequences. It is hence equally important to continue to address the core issues that will determine what our societies and the political landscape will look like post-Covid.

This includes questions about rebuilding the economy in a sustainable manner, how to drive forward digital transformation and, in the words of Chancellor Merkel, “how to strengthen Europe’s role as an anchor of stability in the world.”

The CDU’s newly elected leader Armin Laschet is known for pragmatism and competence. As the current premier of Germany’s most populous state of North Rhine Westphalia, his election as the new leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is seen by many as a sign of continuity and moderation.

The discussion will address questions about the challenges of leadership in crisis times and what may lie ahead for Germany in the post-Merkel era.
