Voting behaviour of people with a migration background

A representative analysis of the voting behaviour in particular of people of Polish, Russian and Turkish origin as well as ethnic German repatriates

Representative results on the voting behaviour of people with a migrant background show significant changes, particularly in the last five years. In this context, the voting behaviour of specific groups, such as those of Turkish, Russian or Polish origin or late repatriates, is always of interest to politicians. Which parties are favoured by Germans with and without a migrant background, as well as by foreigners? Where are the differences and similarities? What political attitudes can explain these voting intentions?

Integration agreements in Europe and implications for Germany

The coalition agreement plans to introduce mandatory integration agreements – an instrument already established in other countries

Integration agreements are part of immigration and migration policy in some European countries. They are intended to provide additional incentive for those affected to commit themselves and better fulfil the general requirements for obtaining residence rights.

Water is becoming a critical resource

Perspectives for climate-resilient water management in Germany and the EU

Water scarcity is increasing worldwide – including in Europe and especially in Germany. Extreme weather events as a result of climate change cause costly damage and endanger livelihoods. At the same time, water supplies are coming under pressure due to pollution, overuse and the generation of renewable energies. Economic and ecological conflicts are the consequences that could also endanger security and social cohesion in the future if countermeasures are not taken in time.

Poland’s East Shield

A comprehensive approach to secure NATO’s Eastern Flank

In 2024, Poland launched the East Shield Program: a massive defence infrastructure project along its borders with Belarus and Russia. A separate project from the border wall with Belarus, it aims to deter conventional attacks through surveillance, mobility infrastructure, and physical obstacles. Poland’s North-Eastern borders are also the external borders of NATO and the EU. Supporting the project strengthens European security and reduces costs in the long term, as deterrence is cheaper than defence.

Security Threats and Chances in the Baltic, High North and Indo-Pacific

Common Connections and Shared Concerns – Opportunities for Interregional Maritime Security Cooperation

Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and wider geostrategic developments highlight the growing connection between Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific defence and security concerns. The opening of the Arctic and the High North through melting sea ice will also bring the two regions closer together strategically. These links present opportunities but also prioritisation challenges for Baltic and northern European states.

Back to square one!

The Free Democratic Party (FDP) after the 2025 federal election

For the second time in their history, the Free Democrats failed to enter the German Bundestag on 23 February 2025. It was only in 2017 that they fought their way back into parliament after an unprecedented renewal. Can the Liberals now repeat this feat?

China's role in development cooperation

A critical look at Chinese development efforts and what Germany can learn from them

China's development cooperation combines development policy and commercial measures. Sustainability standards are subordinated, and individual fundamental rights are relativised due to a different understanding of human rights. Nevertheless, Germany could learn from China's pragmatic approach to align its development cooperation more strategically and interest-driven. In the interest of credibility, this also includes respect for human rights and the rule of law. At the same time, the partner countries' need for economic development must become more of a focus of development cooperation.

Break-up of the traffic light coalition without consequences for political opinions

Results from representative trend surveys on political attitudes

Since December 2022, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation has conducted short surveys on the political attitudes of Germans twice a year. The most recent survey was launched shortly after the break-up of the traffic light coalition on 6 November 2024. This study uses survey data from 2022 to 2024 to show how the political attitudes of the German population have changed following the end of the traffic light coalition. What is the situation at the end of 2024 in terms of satisfaction with democracy or confidence in the future? Has there been a shift to the right in terms of self-positioning on the left-right scale? What about populism and conspiracy theories?

Boost for the Defence Industry

Seven short-term proposals for a competitive domestic defence sector

The USA is withdrawing from Europe as a security guarantor – what should be done now? In order to assert and preserve themselves, Germany and Europe must quickly invest more in their deterrence and defence capabilities. We are not helpless. But defence capability requires significant and long-term investments in our armed forces, in research and development, in infrastructure, materials and personnel. The arms industry plays a key role.
