After five years, the European Parliament elections will be held again in 2024. From June 6th to June 9th, 2024, over 448 million Europeans will be asked to cast their votes for various parties. People in Estonia are waiting with anticipation for the next European elections. If the current Estonian government of the Kallas III cabinet (centre-left coalition) is successful, Estonians will be able to cast their votes via smartphone for the first time in this election. Is this the next step in the progressive digitalisation of the country, or a neck-breaking move at the expense of democracy?

Preliminary report on the elections in Serbia

Possible changes due to early parliamentary elections

On December 17 Serbia will hold early Parliamentary Elections, Local Elections for 65 municipalities and Regional Elections for the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. The elections are a result of societal and political tensions, which were sharpened following two mass shootings in Belgrade and Mladenovac in May 2023 and the intensified tensions with Kosovo. The short and intensive election campaign is marked by increasing polarization. Regardless of the results, Serbia will face great internal and external political challenges in the coming year.

Global climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. In 'Social Ethics in Practice – Shaping Climate Protection Globally Justice', a collaborative project of the Catholic Social Academy Franz Wärme Haus, the Academy Die Wolfsburg and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, experts from various disciplines look at this crisis through the prism of social ethics. They will discuss the role of the state and the market, the social dimension of climate policy and possibilities for climate protection at the municipal level. This work sheds light on the need for socially acceptable, interdisciplinary approaches for a fair design of climate protection.

Successful transformation needs pragmatism but not a new “Sondervermögen”

Sustainable fiscal policy does not need trickery

Following the German Federal Constitutional Court's historic ruling on the 2nd Supplementary Budget Act 2021, ways are being sought to ensure legal financing of the economic transformation. One option that is repeatedly brought up is the possibility of setting up a "Sondervermögen” (special fund) modelled on the special fund for the Bundeswehr (German armed forces). It is important to understand that this is not a real asset; on the contrary, it contains credit authorisations in the amount mentioned. A new paragraph in the Basic Law was necessary for its establishment so that the respective incurrence of debt in the financial year in which it is actually incurred is exempt from the provisions of the debt limit.

Not only is it the way by which millions of people store substantial amounts of data, use software remotely, or stream music, but it is fundamental to every aspect of the digital economy. The Memorandum identifies some of the factors that have hindered the competitiveness of the European cloud industry. Moreover, the participants of the Cadenabbia Forum within the EU Data Summit make recommendations for boosting EU digital and cloud services.

Research and Sources on Contemporary History

In der Reihe „Forschungen und Quellen zur Zeitgeschichte“ veröffentlicht das Archiv für Christlich-Demokratische Politik seit 1980 wissenschaftliche Studien zur Christlichen Demokratie, Darstellungen zur Geschichte der Bundesrepublik und der CDU sowie Biographien wichtiger Repräsentanten. Zu den 50 bisher erschienen Büchern zählen auch Quelleneditionen, wie Protokolle von Parteigremien oder Tagebücher von einflussreichen Politikern. Die Publikationen sind im Buchhandel erhältlich.
