Contestation, Sectarianism, and Reconciliation in the Conflict of Yemen

by Dr. Mohammad Yaghi
On December 2 & 3, 2020 the Regional Program Gulf States (RPG) in collaboration with the program of Sectarianism, Proxies, and De-Sectarianism (SEPAD) at Lancaster University’s Richardson Institute, held a workshop on the conflict in Yemen.

The workshop sought to reflect on the conflict in Yemen since 2014 with a particular focus on the sectarian difference and efforts to circumvent these tensions, understood as de-sectarianization.

The workshop brought together scholars from Yemen, Europe and the US, and engaged them in an interdisciplinary set of discussions that aimed to improve awareness of the conflict and possible avenues for building peace.

The speakers addressed the following questions:

  • How should we best understand the nature of conflicts in Yemen?
  • What are the structural forces that facilitate sectarian mobilization?
  • To what extent has the Yemeni state sought to curtail the influence of sectarian identities and how do we evaluate this success?
  • How important are geopolitical forces in the emergence of sectarian divisions?
  • To what extent have processes of de-sectarianization curtailed the influence of sectarian identities?
  • What are the possibilities for peace building in Yemen?
  • How do we understand the interaction between sectarian, tribal and nationalist identities?
  • What role can - and should - international actors play in the conflict?
The collaboration between RPG and SEPAD will continue 2021 with the aim to hold another workshop on the same topic in September.
