The Summer School for young journalists 2021

CAMPAIGN and ELECTION REPORTING

On the occasion of the fifth anniversary, the Summer School for young journalists this year took place in Sofia, Bulgaria from September 13 to 17, 2021. It was organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Tirana in cooperation with the KAS Media Program South East Europe.

Its main aim was to review the political atmospheres in both Albania and Bulgaria, and discuss about the reporting standards for election campaigns and about the most practical ways to better the everyday duties of journalists.

There were more than 20 attendees from both countries that included young journalists, communication experts, academics, and experienced international reporters. The interest for this event was a strong indicator that this summer school program incites participation from different young professionals.

The meeting was organized around 5 main themes for the presentations that covered the following topics:

  • Reporting standards for election campaigns and the relation between media and politics in Albania and Bulgaria: combining data presented by the director of the Department of Communication and Journalism in Tirana University, Mark Marku and Deputy  Editor in Chief of Dnevnik Petar Karaboev.
  • Reporting on the organization of elections and activities of parties and candidates, also how data-based journalism can be used as a tool for transparency presented by Deutsche Welle’s journalist, Alexandar Detev. 
  • The role of media in the last election campaign in Bulgaria and Albania, and how foreign media reports on current developments in both countries presented by Rrapo Zguri, a lecturer of the Department of Communication and Journalism in Tirana University and Deputy Editor in chief of Dnevnik, Petar Karaboev.
  • Disinformation, fake news and conspiracy theories: Terminology, theory and history of information manipulation, presented by Visiting professor and Adenauer Fellowship, Dr. Christopher Nehring.
  • Fact-checking as a tool to identify fake news and false information in traditional media predented by Mediapool journalist, Dr. Tsvetelina Sokolova.

The presentation were with appointed practical exercises which were presented by the participants and then followed by a critical discussion. The presentations were followed by a Q&A session on the subject discussed during the seminar. The questions were focused on trying to understand more about the situation of the political sphere in the respective countries.
