“You don’t know what the future holds …”

Results of two representative trend surveys

The study shows changes in the political attitudes of the population between December 2022 and June 2023. How did satisfaction with democracy and trust in institutions develop? How optimistic are citizens about the future? How do attitudes differ between East and West Germany and between the various party supporters? How are party sympathies changing? The study explores these questions with the help of two representative surveys conducted six months apart.

Germany needs a fundamental modernization of its public administration. Proposals to this end are legion, rarely differing in their goals, but often neglecting the multitude of veto players: decisions appear opaque, procedures lengthy, administration inefficient and the potential of digitalization lies idle. The discussion about administrative modernization is oftentimes used to project state criticism. What it could be, however, is a debate about the principles of state organization.

From Marital Splitting to Family Splitting?

An Attempt to Rationalize the Debate

Marital splitting (tax brackets: Married Filing Jointly) was introduced in 1958 as a means of supporting families. But in the past 65 years, the realities of life for many families have changed dramatically. Today, the majority of marriages are childless and more than a third of all children are born out of wedlock. It is important to consider how families with children can be better supported. Family splitting is a model that has been mentioned again and again. However, a reform is only conceivable if it is cost-neutral in times of tight public coffers - and thus has winners and losers.

Our study shows how widespread conspiracy theories are among the German population. In which groups of the population does approval turn out to be higher? Which party supporters stand out? Which conspiracy theories are anchored in people's minds and how? Which conspiracies have been solidified by the Corona pandemic? What does it mean when people are immersed in the world of conspiracy theories? Analysis of representative survey data and qualitative in-depth interviews sheds light on these questions.

The Negotiations on the EU-Mercosur Agreement from Uruguay's Perspective

On July 17th, at the first EU-Latin America summit in eight years, the EU-Mercosur trade agreement, which is not yet fully finalized, is set to be further consolidated and completed by the end of the year at the latest. An additional chapter is intended to address the remaining concerns about the agreement and help prevent human rights violations, environmental damage, and climate impacts. In an interview with Nicolás Albertoni, the Deputy Foreign Secretary of Uruguay, we discuss the significance of the EU-Mercosur agreement in the South American public sphere, the importance of the EU-CELAC summit for dialogue between the regions, and the need for a timely conclusion of the agreement.

Deep-Sea Mining

Balancing resource opportunities with the ecological risks

Rising demand for critical raw materials is increasingly moving the focus to the deep sea realm with its vast mineral wealth. Mining is controversial, however, as there are fears of severe environmental damage. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is currently developing rules to regulate mineral extraction. Germany advocates avoiding deep-sea mining until risks have been sufficiently researched and appropriate mining rules elaborated.

In der Reihe „Forschungen und Quellen zur Zeitgeschichte“ veröffentlicht das Archiv für Christlich-Demokratische Politik seit 1980 wissenschaftliche Studien zur Christlichen Demokratie, Darstellungen zur Geschichte der Bundesrepublik und der CDU sowie Biographien wichtiger Repräsentanten. Zu den 50 bisher erschienen Büchern zählen auch Quelleneditionen, wie Protokolle von Parteigremien oder Tagebücher von einflussreichen Politikern. Die Publikationen sind im Buchhandel erhältlich.

Sociopolitical Series

Veröffentlicht wurden herausragende Dissertationsschriften mit gesellschaftspolitisch relevanten Themen von Stipendiatinnen und Stipendiaten der Begabtenförderung und Personen, die ihrem Promotionskolleg „Soziale Marktwirtschaft“ kooptiert sind.
