Water is becoming a critical resource

Perspectives for climate-resilient water management in Germany and the EU

Water scarcity is increasing worldwide – including in Europe and especially in Germany. Extreme weather events as a result of climate change cause costly damage and endanger livelihoods. At the same time, water supplies are coming under pressure due to pollution, overuse and the generation of renewable energies. Economic and ecological conflicts are the consequences that could also endanger security and social cohesion in the future if countermeasures are not taken in time.

In numerous meetings, conversations and discussions with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and its guests, Lars Zimmermann, KAS-Fellow 2024, advocated for the modernisation of the state and administration, the responsible use of artificial intelligence and a critical openness towards new technologies. He has challenged existing processes, identified new opportunities and suggested solutions. Im AfD-Grundsatzprogramm von 2016 zeigen sich Strukturelemente extremistischen Denkens. Die AfD konstruiert ein Freund-Feind-Schema („Volk“ vs. „politische Klasse“) und propagiert die Theorie eines „Großen Austauschs“. Freiheitsrechte wie Presse-, Religions- und Wissenschaftsfreiheit werden relativiert. Die Partei idealisiert eine ethnisch homogene Gesellschaft und stellt sich gegen die freiheitlich-demokratische Grundordnung.

Poland’s East Shield

A comprehensive approach to secure NATO’s Eastern Flank

In 2024, Poland launched the East Shield Program: a massive defence infrastructure project along its borders with Belarus and Russia. A separate project from the border wall with Belarus, it aims to deter conventional attacks through surveillance, mobility infrastructure, and physical obstacles. Poland’s North-Eastern borders are also the external borders of NATO and the EU. Supporting the project strengthens European security and reduces costs in the long term, as deterrence is cheaper than defence.

From Bangalore to Berlin: Indian students strengthen STEM fields and contribute to securing skilled labor

India is becoming increasingly important to Germany as a geopolitical partner and hub of innovation, especially due to its young population, strong economic growth, and technological progress. With around 50,000 individuals, Indian students form the largest international group in Germany, particularly in STEM fields. Many stay after graduation and work in highly skilled professions. To better harness their potential, more English-language degree programs, faster visa processes, affordable housing, language support, practical training opportunities, and strong integration networks are needed.

Climate protection is being exploited in some cases for acts of extremist sabotage. Left-wing extremist groups use violence to target infrastructure, businesses and government institutions. This article analyses three categories of action and highlights international networks – such as the transnational Switch Off network. Also it provides detailed recommendations for politicians, security authorities, academics and civil society on how to protect legitimate protest and effectively counter further radicalisation.

Research and Sources on Contemporary History

In der Reihe „Forschungen und Quellen zur Zeitgeschichte“ veröffentlicht das Archiv für Christlich-Demokratische Politik seit 1980 wissenschaftliche Studien zur Christlichen Demokratie, Darstellungen zur Geschichte der Bundesrepublik und der CDU sowie Biographien wichtiger Repräsentanten. Zu den 50 bisher erschienen Büchern zählen auch Quelleneditionen, wie Protokolle von Parteigremien oder Tagebücher von einflussreichen Politikern. Die Publikationen sind im Buchhandel erhältlich.

Sociopolitical Series

Veröffentlicht wurden herausragende Dissertationsschriften mit gesellschaftspolitisch relevanten Themen von Stipendiatinnen und Stipendiaten der Begabtenförderung und Personen, die ihrem Promotionskolleg „Soziale Marktwirtschaft“ kooptiert sind.
