Political climate ahead of 2025 federal election – Expectations of the parties

Everything must change, nothing may?

How do voters of different parties talk about key socio-political challenges such as migration, the economy and the climate? Has the political climate of opinion changed? Based on twelve face-to-face focus group discussions at a total of six locations, this study provides important insights into the basic political mood in Germany. The observations also allow positive conclusions to be drawn about the culture of debate in Germany.

A Lifestyle Typology based on a Representative and a Qualitative Survey

Politics, political information and discussions are a natural part of everyday life for many people. Others avoid politics. For political communication, the entire spectrum from the highly interested to the disinterested is relevant, because they are all (potential) voters. Lifestyle typologies are an important tool for dealing with different target groups. The study presents a lifestyle typology based on a representative survey and an extensive qualitative interview study. Applying a scientifically founded typology the study describes nine lifestyle types in detail.

A new approach to combating anti-Semitism

Plea for the inclusion of the fight against anti-Semitism in the Basic Law

Since the coronavirus pandemic, the associated conspiracy myths and the pogrom of 7 October 2023, antisemitism has posed a permanent challenge to the state. A major problem in the fight against antisemitism is not the lack of laws and state objectives, but the lack of law enforcement. For this reason, the office of the Federal Government Commissioner for Anti-Semitism should be replaced by that of the Bundestag Commissioner for Anti-Semitism, modelled on the Bundestag Commissioner for the Armed Forces and enshrined in the constitution.

What’s next for ETS2?

Suggestions and Considerations for Implementation and Strengthening Credibility

The new ETS2 stands at a critical juncture in the European climate architecture. Delays or weakening of the system could jeopardize the credibility of ETS1 and the entire EU climate policy. To prevent this, targeted safeguard measures and an improvement in the consultation process are necessary. However, political pressure could lead to premature adjustments that undermine long-term investments in emission reductions. Complementary measures and the targeted use of auction revenues for social compensation are essential to facilitate the introduction of ETS2.

While the media focus has so far been primarily on the so-called ‘migration turnaround’, integration policy has received little attention. However, the coalition agreement also sets a new course in this area and suggests a departure from key elements of the Ampel's integration policy.

The construction sector is responsible for a significant portion of CO₂ emissions, making it crucial to achieving climate goals. A building-specific CO₂ cap, similar to those in France and Denmark, could provide clarity, encourage investments, and foster sustainable construction. This cap, which would be technology-neutral, could complement the emissions trading system and offer regulatory certainty. It would drive innovation and help meet climate targets while maintaining competitiveness in the sector.

Research and Sources on Contemporary History

In der Reihe „Forschungen und Quellen zur Zeitgeschichte“ veröffentlicht das Archiv für Christlich-Demokratische Politik seit 1980 wissenschaftliche Studien zur Christlichen Demokratie, Darstellungen zur Geschichte der Bundesrepublik und der CDU sowie Biographien wichtiger Repräsentanten. Zu den 50 bisher erschienen Büchern zählen auch Quelleneditionen, wie Protokolle von Parteigremien oder Tagebücher von einflussreichen Politikern. Die Publikationen sind im Buchhandel erhältlich.

Sociopolitical Series

Veröffentlicht wurden herausragende Dissertationsschriften mit gesellschaftspolitisch relevanten Themen von Stipendiatinnen und Stipendiaten der Begabtenförderung und Personen, die ihrem Promotionskolleg „Soziale Marktwirtschaft“ kooptiert sind.
