Saudi Arabia’s Net-Zero World Narrative

Balancing Hydrocarbon Dependency and Sustainable Development in the Gulf Region

Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region are experiencing a faster warming trend than the global average, placing them at the forefront of climate change. As a leading oil producer, Saudi Arabia stands at a pivotal crossroads, grappling with the challenge of transitioning to a sustainable future while safeguarding its economic stability. This study examines the Kingdom’s ambitious net-zero goals, the challenges of implementing the Circular Carbon Economy, and the gap between ambition and action.

Securing prosperity and sustainably

Successful structural change through climate-neutral industrialisation

How can the generally desired structural change towards climate-neutral industries be achieved? In Germany, the path to this goal can vary considerably from state to state: Federal States with existing industries need to secure a larger supply of clean energy, while states in the north in particular already produce more than enough clean electricity but do not have enough industrial customers for it. In our study the authors look particularly at Schleswig-Holstein as an example.

The Economic Race in Southeast Asia – and why Europe is falling behind

How Europe can compete with China, Japan, and the United States?

In rapidly emerging Southeast Asia, global economic powers are vying for influence. While China, the United States, and Japan have strategically repositioned themselves in the region, Europe risks falling behind. What unites these three nations is their use of various models of cooperation between government and business as part of a comprehensive strategy to support their companies' market entry into Southeast Asia. Europe should learn from the strategic adjustments of its competitors and align its political measures more closely with the interests of European businesses in the region.

Courage for new ideas – How can we increase the efficiency of our healthcare system?

For lasting reliability of our healthcare system

The Federal Republic of Germany has an efficient healthcare system, which also enjoys a high international reputation, because medical progress is available here when needed, largely independently of the financial means of the individual. However, new treatment options and demographic change are leading to a sharp increase in expenditure for statutory health insurance. How can this expenditure be covered by contribution income in the long term and how can the long-term reliability of our healthcare system be ensured in view of these problems?

Tools for ‘smart’ urban development: Urban Digital Twins

Organising Smart City as a platform: realistic digital images of a ‘city section’, for the evaluation and simulation of urban situations or processes

Cities are complex and multifunctional network structures. Smart tools are needed to operate in this complexity: Depending on the available data, Urban Digital Twins can represent a realistic digital image of a ‘city section’. This allows complex interrelationships, specific urban constellations or processes to be visualised for evaluation and simulation. They can support administration, business and urban society as well in better solving real problems in a city.

Concerns and fears of the electorate – Results from representative surveys

What Germans are afraid of – On feelings of threat among the German population

Representative results on feelings of threat show how deeply certain crises affect society. Developments over time provide information on whether fears and concerns have increased and which threats are perceived as permanent. Has the Russian war of aggression had a lasting effect on Germans' sense of security? How great is the fear of the effects of climate change? And how have the feelings of threat among party supporters developed since the last federal election in 2021?

The Future of NATO in the Aftermath of the U.S. Elections

More European responsibility for transatlantic relations

The outcome of the November 5 election will have a major impact on NATO’s future - and by extension, the fate of the most successful defense alliance of all time. It is evident that the geopolitical priorities of the USA will continue to pivot towards the Indo-Pacific region in the coming years, despite the ongoing armed conflict in Europe. This shift underscores the urgent need for decision-makers in Germany and other European NATO countries to strengthen their defense policies and take greater responsibility for regional security.

Key regional players in the new global order

India, Kenya, Columbia, Turkey

In times of global power shifts and geopolitical fragmentation, it is a challenge for Germany and the European Union to build stable and mutually attractive partnerships. The perspective of the (potential) partner countries is rarely taken into account. What are their central interests, what specific dependencies characterise their foreign policy decisions, in which regional orders are they integrated? And what determines their view of Germany and the EU? This project is dedicated to these and other questions. With India, Kenya, Colombia and Turkey, four countries from four regions of the world were analysed and their foreign policy positions examined more closely. The result is an attempt to draw conclusions for the (foreign) policy of Germany and the European Union in dealing with these and other countries with which strategic partnerships are to be intensified and expanded.

From protection seekers to skilled workers

Factors influencing the labour market integration of Ukrainian refugees

Many Ukrainians who have fled to Germany are highly educated, with a significant proportion holding vocational or university degrees. However, their employment rate remains lower than that of many other European countries. What are the reasons for this and what role do demographic factors play? An examination of institutional structural barriers and the socio-demographic composition of Ukrainian refugees in Germany sheds light on the factors influencing their entry into the labour market.
