Old Rulers, Young People

Nigeria’s Youth Excluded from Political Participation

Nigerian society is deeply divided. A large majority of young people is faced with an old political elite that clings to power. Gerontocracy is not only culturally conditioned, but also protected by law. Sharing power is not an option for the established ruling elite.

The Youth, Peace and Security Agenda in the Context of the United Nations

Strengthening the Positive Role of Youth in Peace Processes

Globally, there has been a rise in violent conflict and an increase in civilian casualties since 2010. The majority of conflicts involve low-income countries. According to UN estimates, in 2020, 90 per cent of the world’s 1.85 billion young people between the ages of 10 and 24 were living in developing countries. Given the increase in armed conflict over the past decade, it is now estimated that more than 25 per cent of youth are exposed to violence and conflict.

Motives Behind the Soft-Line Approaches to the Myanmar Coup d’État

Analysing the Stance of China, India, and Russia

Following the military coup in Myanmar on 1 February 2021, Western countries were quick to express their condemnation and discuss sanctions against the junta. However, countries in the region reacted more moderately, calling for dialogue with the regime. This article will seek to explain some of the reasons behind such a stance.

The Opportunities and Challenges of Germany’s Africa Policy

No German head of government has made a stronger, more constructive, and more sustained commitment to our neighbouring continent than Angela Merkel. The next German government would do well to continue along this path and to place Africa even more firmly at the centre of its policies. The positive steps taken in recent years should be used as a springboard for taking our relations with African partners to a whole new level.

Worum geht es hier also?

Between Awakening and Repression

The Arab Media Landscape in Transition

Ten years after the uprisings of the Arab Spring, the media landscape in the Middle East and North Africa is in a state of radical transition. Mass media in countries like Tunisia and Sudan, which were once loyal to the state in their reporting, now report in a more balanced manner. At the same time, the rich Gulf states and Egypt in particular are investing in their state media. However, a whole range of private online formats, such as blogs and podcasts, are attempting to defy the dominance of state media and to report objectively for the people in the region.
