Die internationale Arbeit der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung beteiligt sich auf verschiedene Arten an der Debatte über das Verhältnis von Islam und Demokratie. Da unter den Muslimen eine große Meinungsvielfalt vorherrscht, richtet sich diese Arbeit in erster Linie an individuelle Muslime, deren Ideen mit den Zielen der Stiftung im Einklang stehen. Vor allem im asiatischen Bereich lassen sich dabei positive Entwicklungen beobachten. Die sechs Beiträge dieser Ausgabe geben einen Überblick über die Stiftungsarbeit in islamischen Ländern.

The Indian subcontinent is an important part of Asia which plays a considerable geopolitical role. For quite some time now, Morocco's political class has been anxious to steer an ambitious course of modernizing and opening the country. While the economy and the infrastructure are being reformed, political continuity is maintained. Political Islam appears to have no foothold in this part of northwest Africa. Although Islamist movements do exist, they appear surprisingly moderate. Is political Islam in decline? Can modernisation and identity preservation go hand in hand after all?

It is not only the size of Indonesia that is fascinating. What is also impressive is its ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity and the tolerance among the different religions that has once been proverbial in this Islamic country. But where does the republic stand today? With more than 225 million inhabitants, Indonesia has the fourth largest population in the world, and with 190 million Muslims it is the biggest Islamic country.
