Local Elections 2011

Factsheet

In 2011, the ANC retained its dominant position and ended with a large majority of municipalities under its rule. However, these elections marked a progression for the DA and other smaller parties.It is worth noting that 2011 elections also meant that the South African democracy is growing stronger notably because it showed that an international trend where elections and particularly, local government elections progressively produce lower voter turnouts is inapplicable to the young democracy.

With the upcoming local elections it is pertinent to analyse the decentralisation patterns in South Africa. In order to complete its transition towards a constitutional democracy, South Africa decided to renew its local governance system after apartheid. The underpinning of South Africa’s decentralisation is provided by the 1996 Constitution. Diminishing the gap between democratic institutions and populations is amongst the main aims of the decentralisation policies in South Africa.

Der jüngste Staat der Welt wurde am 9. Juli 2016 fünf Jahre alt. Doch die Feiern fielen aus. Stattdessen eskalierte erneut die Gewalt und forderte hunderte Todesopfer. Auch wenn vorläufig wieder Ruhe eingekehrt ist - ein eilig ausgerufener Waffenstillstand scheint zunächst zu halten - so wird doch deutlich, wie schwierig die Lage im Südsudan bleibt und wie unzureichend die Umsetzung des Friedensabkommens vom August 2015 vorangeschritten ist.

Am 12. Juli verkündete der Ständige Schiedshof in Den Haag seine Entscheidung: Im von den Philippinen initiierten Schiedsverfahren gegen die Volksrepublik China gab das Tribunal bekannt, dass Chinas Gebietsansprüche im Südchinesischen Meer nicht durch die sogenannte „9-Strich-Linie“ gerechtfertigt seien.

In einem in den letzten zwei Wochen an Überraschungen nicht armen Großbritannien erfolgte gestern der nächste Paukenschlag: Von den fünf angetretenen Kandidaten der Conservatives für die Nachfolge des Premierministers David Cameron waren nach zwei fraktionsinternen Abstimmungen die beiden weiblichen Kandidatinnen übrig geblieben: Innenministerin Theresa May und Energiestaatssekretärin Andrea Leadsom. Nach dem überraschenden Rücktritt von Andrea Leadsom kommt es nun nicht zur erwarteten Mitgliederabstimmung, der Weg ist somit frei für Theresa May, die ihr Amt am Mittwoch antreten wird.

Norway´s government seeks for renewal of the national budget

Norway has to reduce its dependence on mineral oil

The decline of prices of mineral oil from about 110 USD (around 97 Euro) per barrel in summer 2014 to the current price of under 50 USD (around 44 Euro) endangers Norway's wealth. The development of the oil and gas prices has been weaker than expected, although the oil prices have slightly increased again in the last two months. That is why the Norwegian state has to balance out lower income from the mineral oil activities. At the same time, state oil funds grow slower than predicted.
