The Politics of Health Care Reform in the US: Can President Obama Deliver?

The current health care reform debate has become badly, even bitterly, divided over a host of politically sensitive issues, including the huge overall projected financial burden, the scale of government involvement, and the increasingly partisan and inter-party ideological battles. Combined, these issues make it almost impossible to predict whether President Obama can muster the 218 House of Representatives and 60 Senate votes he needs in order to enact a health care reform bill into law.

The numerous educational institutions of the Al-Azhar as well as the dormitories of the Cairo University now refuse access to fully veiled students. The consequences are angry protests and lawsuits. Ungefähr ein Jahr nachdem die Pleite der Lehman Brothers Bank die schwerste globale Finanzkrise seit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs eingeläutet hatte, trafen sich an diesem Wochenende die Staats- und Regierungschefs der führenden zwanzig Wirtschaftsnationen in Pittsburgh. Im Vorfeld wurde viel darüber diskutiert, ob G20 wirklich der richtige Rahmen sei, oder ob die Interessen nicht zu weit auseinander lägen und die Verhandlungen doch besser unter den wirklich wichtigen Nationen geführt werden sollten. Pittsburgh wurde somit zu einem ersten ‚test case’ für das G20-Format.

Egyptian Reactions on the Parliamentary Elections in Germany 2009

Until noon of the 28th September no official statements of members of the Egyptian Government on the election results were released. Observers however point to the telephone call President Mubarak gave Chancellor Merkel on the election eve (around 10 pm) to congratulate her to the election result. This rapid and personal congratulation is seen as a clear expression of personal appreciation. According to partners and friends of the foundation the positive appraisal is being shared by the majority of the Egyptian ruling elite. (in German)

Am 13. September begann die offizielle Wahlkampfphase in Mosambik für die Präsidentschafts-, Parlaments- und Provinzwahlen am 28. Oktober 2009. Mehr noch als die Auftritte von Kandidaten, die Botschaften der Parteien oder einzelne Übergriffe im Rahmen des Wahlkampfes bewegt allerdings viele Bürger die Frage, ob es richtig ist, dass nur zwölf Parteien von 29, die Kandidatenlisten eingereicht hatten, an den Parlaments- und Provinzwahlen teilnehmen können, davon lediglich zwei – die Regierungspartei FRELIMO und die größte Oppositionspartei RENAMO – bei den Parlamentswahlen landesweit.

In January 2004, the U.S. Congress passed special legislation to establish a new approach to donor assistance in the form of a new program under a new, semi-governmental corporation, the Millennium Challenge Corporation. First, we should consider the principles, intent, and the methodologyof this new MCC approach. Second, we should consider its actual implementation and critiques, including the inevitable operational compromises, problems and resolutions, and concerns. To enhance thebrevity of this document, each item below is abbreviated.
