Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel zu Besuch in Lettland

Am Abend des 6. Septembers traf Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel auf ihrer zweitägigen Reise nach Litauen und Lettland in der lettischen Hauptstadt Riga ein. Auf ihrem Programm am Folgetag standen neben Gesprächen mit dem lettischen Staatspräsidenten Valdis Zatlers, Ministerpräsident Valdis Dombrovskis und Außenminister Aivis Ronis auch ein Treffen mit Vertretern der deutschen Wirtschaft in Lettland sowie der Besuch des Okkupationsmuseums und der Petri-Kirche.

There is no doubting the fact that relations between Germany and the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are both good and close. Germany’s new minister for foreign affairs, Guido Westerwelle, also leaves no room for doubt as to the particular quality of the relations. Shortly after taking office in the fall of 2009 he met his opposite numbers from the Baltic states in Brussels for consultations which subsequently continued in July 2010 in Tallinn in the traditional 3 + 1 format.

In a joint declaration of the CDU/CSU and the SPD Parliamentary fraction in May 2009 both parties supported the Baltic Sea Strategy of the EU. The German Bundestag welcomed this European initiative bringing the Baltic Sea region into the focus of the EU. Having in mind the geographic borders of Germany, the German government as well as the German Bundestag are expecting the Baltic Sea region to become a model for similar initiatives in other regions in Europe, like the Danube region or the Adriatic region where Germany also has political and economic interests.

LPP/LC und TP schließen Wahlbündnis "Für ein gutes Lettland" (Par labu Latviju)

Nach dem Zusammenschluss des bürgerlichen Lagers zum Bündnis "Vienotība" (Einheit) haben am vergangenen Wochenende Lettlands Erste Partei/Lettlands Weg (LPP/LC) und die Volkspartei (TP) den Grundstein für eine engere Zusammenarbeit gelegt. Unter dem Vorsitz des ehemaligen Staatspräsidenten Lettlands, Guntis Ulmanis, schlossen sich die beiden Oppositionsparteien zur Wahlallianz "Für ein gutes Lettland" (Par labu Latviju, PLL) zusammen.

Mart Laar zum 50.

Am 22. April begeht der zweifache Ministerpräsident Estlands Mart Laar seinen fünfzigsten Geburtstag. Als Regierungschef seines Landes (1992-94/1999-2001) führte Laar die "Flat Tax" ein und koppelte die estnische Krone an die Deutsche Mark, um der neuen Währung Stabilität zu verleihen, und schuf damit die Grundlage des estnischen Wirtschaftswunders. Außenpolitisch schlug er einen konsequenten Westkurs seines Landes ein, der in der Aufnahme Estlands in EU und NATO im Jahr 2004 mündete.

Gründungskongress des Parteienbündnisses „Vienotība“ erfolgreich verlaufen

Mit vielen historischen und nationalen Anklängen führte das Bündnis „Vienotība“ am Samstag, den 6. März, seinen Gründungskongress im gut besuchten Lettischen Nationaltheater durch. Am Ort der Unabhängigkeitserklärung Lettlands von 1918 soll der Geist der ersten Nationalstaatswerdung die politische, wirtschaftliche und geistige Wende in der tiefsten Krise des jungen demokratischen Staates herbeiführen.
