Maritime security in East Asia

The aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine

Maritime security has evolved as one of the most consequential issues in Asia. Maritime security is becoming the central nexus tying the different challenges of the region, such as territorial disputes, supply chains, and naval build-up, together.

“I’m not afraid, let them be afraid”

Ladies and Gentlemen, “I am not afraid, let them be afraid” – these were the words of Ales Bialiatski, said to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the leader of the democratic forces, before returning to Minsk. Soon after, he was arrested and imprisoned. This year, the court in Belarus has sentenced Bialiatski to 10 years’ imprisonment on politically motivated grounds.

"The Alpha and Omega of a Representative Democracy”

The Impact of COVID-19 on Elections in South Korea and Europe

More than a year into COVID-19, the pandemic continues to affect all facets of daily life all around the world with a considerable impact on our democracies. To avoid the further spreading of the virus, parliamentary, regional or local elections are re-scheduled, alternative voting processes are introduced and new technologies are in the center of attention. Although geographically separated, South Korea and Germany aim on fostering cooperation and an active dialogue during the pandemic to assess best practices and plan further steps to this point. In this regard, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung together with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea held their third digital expert dialogue on "COVID-19 and Public Governance: The Impact of COVID-19 on Election Management and Voting Behavior in South Korea and Europe" on May 20th 2021.

"No one is safe until everyone is safe“- Effective Global Vaccination Strategies for Vaccine Access

An Exchange of Experiences between South Korea and Germany

The COVID-19 pandemic shows once again how irrelevant national borders are in a globalized world and how detrimental an initially local issue can be for the entire globe. Although geographically separated, South Korea and Germany aim at fostering cooperation and an active dialogue during the pandemic to assess best practices and plan further steps to this point. In this regard, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung together with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) organized the expert dialogue "COVID-19 and Public Governance: Effective Global Vaccination Strategies for Vaccine Access" on April 29th 2021.
