Coping with COVID-19: International Perspectives

Eighth session: Ukraine

Fear, uncertainty, changes, disruption… These are the best words to describe today’s picture of the world. The Coronavirus has not left any country untouched and has already affected the lives of millions of people. Lockdown or open borders, quarantine or free movement, #stayathome or #donotpanic, indifference or calmness, anxiety or discretion, exaggeration or cautiousness? What is currently happening around the world? What strategies are the national governments adhering to? What is the public attitude towards the present situation? In this series of online discussions, we will explore these questions with the country office directors of KAS as well as discuss the pandemic’s future implications on the economic, political and social life in their countries.

The World HandCOV’d: EU - Strategic dilemmas facing EU in the post-corona world

The pandemic disruption is not likely to change our world altogether, but it will clearly have profound geopolitical implications, including for international security. In order to understand those possible implications, the Minsk Dialogue Council on International Relations and KAS Belarus are continuing a series of virtual panels that will zoom in on strategic dilemmas facing key pillars of international security in the post-corona world.

The World HandCOV’d: Assessing longer-term implications of the pandemic disruption for int. security

Strategic dilemmas facing NATO in the post-corona world

The pandemic of the new coronavirus is on everyone’s mind. Besides the conspicuous immediate implications for our personal lives the unprecedented events unfolding in front of us seem to have historical magnitude. Even though most analysts agree that the global outbreak of the coronavirus, as a virological phenomenon, is in itself hardly a game-changer for world affairs, it looks increasingly likely that the repercussions of the reactions by governments around the globe will have a significant impact on the international system beyond the pandemic. Among the multitude of ongoing transformations, some will accelerate while others might slow down, take a halt or change direction. But since hardly any of them are likely to remain completely unaffected, it is fair to say that international politics as a whole have fallen captive to COVID-19.

„Free the Children Now!“

On November 15 and 16, 2023, a group of relatives of hostages abducted in the Gaza Strip visited Germany.

In the course of Hamas' brutal terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, over 200 people were abducted to the Gaza Strip and have been held there for over five weeks. Among the hostages are at least 34 children. 20 of them are now orphans without knowing it, as the terrorists killed their parents. Impressive initiatives have been formed in Israel to free the hostages, which have also met with a great response internationally. On November 15 and 16, 2023, a group of relatives of hostages abducted in the Gaza Strip visited Germany: Gilad Korngold, Avihai Brodutch and Batsheva Yahalomi Cohen with their daughter Yael. All of them had family members - partners, children or grandchildren - abducted to the Gaza Strip. Talks were held with the Qatari Embassy, Bundestag President Bärbel Bas, Finance Minister Christian Lindner, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael Roth, and the Deputy Chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group for Foreign Affairs, Johann Wadephul, as well as other members of the Bundestag and the Federal Chancellery. The delegation also took part in the commemoration of the Reichspogromnacht in the Berlin House of Representatives. A press conference was held at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation on Wednesday afternoon.

Albanien – Ein Land im Aufbruch

17. bis 26. Oktober

Europa-Rede 2023

On November 9, the anniversary of the Reichspogromnacht in 1938 and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the Europe Speech took place for the 14th time. Every year, the stage belongs to the presidents of the European institutions: Parliament, Council and Commission. This year, Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, gave the State of Europe speech and provided impetus for a future-proof Europe. Moreover, young Europeans presented their innovative ideas from the "KAS Makerthon Europe". During the event, the audience voted and the winner was allowed to take part in the panel discussion with President Metsola. Phillipp Lahm, Tournament Director of the 2024 European Football Championship, also provided valuable input.

Geburtstag.

Mehr Forschung über Islamismus und Antisemitismus

Internationale Fachtagung zum Thema „Islamism in Germany and Europe. Research Trends, Blank Spots and Political Relevance”

Refugee debate needs European solution

Antonio Tajani emphasizes the importance of Germany

"We need a long-term strategy at the European level on how to reduce refugee numbers. Germany has an important role to play here," said Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani during his visit to the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Berlin on Thursday. Tajani reported on the recent increase in the number of refugees in Italy and the resulting challenges for his country. He emphasized the need for migration agreements between the European Union and the countries of origin.
