Nach dem Rückzug der ursprünglich vorgesehenen Gastgeber Kolumbien und Argentinien findet die 47. Auflage der südamerikanischen Kontinentalmeisterschaft im Corona-Hotspot Brasilien statt. Der Oberste Gerichtshof stimmte den Plänen des südamerikanischen Fußballverbands CONMEBOL letztlich zu, die auch Staatspräsident Bolsonaro trotz einiger Skepsis in der Bevölkerung deutlich befürwortet hatte. Nach Spielerprotesten, Sponsorenabsagen und zahlreichen Coronafällen bereits vor Turnierbeginn steht jedoch fest, dass die diesjährige Copa zweifelsohne die polemischste Ausgabe in der 105-jährigen Geschichte der Sportveranstaltung ist und entsprechend große politische Relevanz besitzt.

Die Regierung Bolsonaro unter Druck – Wiederwahl in Gefahr?

Seit Ende April beschäftigt sich ein Untersuchungsausschuss im brasilianischen Senat mit der Frage, ob Brasiliens Staatspräsident Jair Bolsonaro und seine Regierung für Versäumnisse etwa bei der Impfstoffbeschaffung sowie für generelles Fehlverhalten und Unregelmäßigkeiten im Umgang mit der Pandemie Verantwortung tragen. Zahlreiche Beobachter gehen davon aus, dass die Regierung durch Fehlentscheidungen und fahrlässiges Handeln eine Mitschuld an den etwa 430.000 brasilianischen Corona-Toten hat. So könnten auch Bolsonaros Chancen auf eine zweite Amtszeit sinken, wenn diese Schuld nachgewiesen wird.
