The Internet and Social Media as an ethical challenge for Civil society

Details

Social Media is gaining increasing importance and is leading to many social dynamics. KAS wants to understand and follow up with these developments in the best possible way by promoting dialogue with various experts.

The invention of the printing press in the 15th century, the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century and the widespread introduction of electricity in the 20th century all had dramatically changed the workings of the social and political orders of their ages. In our times, the internet is the supreme transforming agent, radically changing the ways and manners in which the world and the many societies within it work and interact. The information highway has turned hitherto scarce information flows into abundance, and has thus affected nearly all phenomena that compose the daily life of any given individual.

One central topic in this epic story has been the empowerment of the individual. For the longest time in human history, organized interests had led the vanguard in providing information flows and forming public opinions. The internet however has battered down that monopoly. It made it possible for anyone with internet access to participate and contribute to the information creation process. In doing so once established patterns have been torn upside down, new dynamics of interaction are constantly introduced.

Today's world uses the Internet as an important means to contribute to the process of globalization and to increase the sphere of influence of human beings in general and nations. However, due to the prevailing capitalist-driven economic system in which winners and losers always exist, not everyone may enjoy the "wonders" of the Internet. However, it can and should be used for peaceful purposes and social order. The e-democracy can be exercised for the purpose of improving the quality of life, supporting remote communities and sending support to people in extreme and disastrous situations. In this technology age we need cooperation between countries to be the highest priority in our work schedules in order to achieve the best possible state model beneficial to everyone.

These dynamics have already been affecting almost all imaginable areas of human conduct and there is no doubt that the internet and Social Media have played a crucial role in the global wave of protests and revolutions. How governments are reacting and adapting to these technological and social changes will be the focus of our discussion.
