In this online format, we are organising discussions with the Director of a different KAS Office on a regular basis, in which the latest developments in the respective country or region as well as the status quo of the relations with the European Union are discussed. The next session will focus on Georgia and its relations to the European Union between accession and geopolitical tensions.

This ses-sion will focus on Portugal, where early Parliamentary Elections are scheduled for 10 March 2024.

25th Anniversary of the Euro – Navigating through Crisis towards Stability

The start of the new year was also the 25-year anniversary of the Euro. These 25 years were – in part – very tumultuous years. The Euro and with it also the EU has developed in unexpected ways. Its guardian, the European Central Bank, had to take on a much more active role than it had been envisioned originally. The currency itself and its image has also changed over the years. Despite the troubled start it has also become a symbol for European Unity and how close we as Europeans have grown together over the years.

How to campaign for European elections in 2019

“We all know that it is our political party that can bring forward our continent”, Dara Murphy, EPP Vice-President and Election Campaign Director, declared at the dinner roundtable “Friends of Parliament” in the European Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. Under the heading “How to campaign for European elections 2019” Murphy presented the election campaign the EPP will be pursuing over the next 15 months. He called for EPP policy leaders to aim for clear messaging and greater EU-wide focus in the elections.

The Russian Factor

"We underestimated Russia politically and overestimated Russia economical-ly", stated Prof. Lien Verpoest, Director of the Centre for Russian Studies at the KU Leuven, during a workshop jointly organized by the European Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the KU Leuven. Under the heading “Cross-party cooperation within the EPP: The Russian Factor”, European policy makers and academic representatives came together at KADOC in Leuven in order to discuss the potential Russian influence on political agendas in the region.

Anlässlich des Holocaust Gedenktages richtete das Europabüro der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) in Zusammenarbeit mit der Israelischen Botschaft zur EU und dem American Jewish Committee Transatlantic Institute (AJC) am 25. Januar 2018 eine Filmvorführung des Dramas „Die Unsichtbaren“ und eine anschließende Diskussionsrunde mit der Holocaust-Überlebenden Hanni Lévy aus.

Collective Redress in Europe

Perspectives and Upcoming Milestones

Die Europäische Kommission empfahl 2013 kollektive Rechtsdurchsetzungsverfahren („Collective Redress“). Dadurch soll festgelegt werden, dass alle Mitgliedsstaaten, die keinen Rechtsdurchsetzungsmechanismus auf nationaler Ebene für Unterlassungs- und Schadensersatzverfahren („Injunctive and compensatory relief“) besitzen, diesen einführen sollten.
