Workshop
fully bookedEurope in an increasingly challenging world
Online Workshop
The European Union finds itself in an increasingly complex global environment. With the Corona pandemic still dominating most state actions and the everyday life of its citizens, new regional and global powers are emerging with the intention to challenge the status quo and with the ambition to create a counterweight vis- á-vis the Western states and the rules-based international order. In the course of the next years, the EU will have to define its own position in a global context and put its internal procedures and mechanisms to the test to make sure that it can continue to act effectively and efficiently.
Event
fully bookedChanged political realities in Germany and the role of CDU/CSU as the opposition leader
Online Event
2021 was a significant year for German politics. After 16 years and four legislative terms, Chancellor Angela Merkel did not run again in the Federal Elections and left the political stage. What most experts rightfully describe as the “end of an era” came also with a new political landscape. Due to severe losses of CDU and CSU, other political parties were able to form a coalition and did so in December. Since then, Germany is governed by the first “Ampelkoalition” (consisting of Social Democrats, Liberals and Greens) on the Federal level led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Both EPP parties were left with no other option than to accept their role as leader of the opposition, in which they are joined by the far-left party Die Linke and the far-right AfD. While the new government agreed on an ambitious coalition agreement with a strong emphasize on the fight against climate change, economic recovery after the pandemic as well as modernization of the coun- try in general, CDU/CSU find themselves in a situation in which they last have been from 1998 to 2005.

The hotly contested Arctic: Why we need more EU in the region
Online Event
To what extent are the European member states, bordering the Arctic region, involved in the race for the Arctic? How can the European Union engage with the growing geopolitical importance of the Arctic, the impact of competition for natural resources, and new environmental and security risks in the region? What are Brussels and the EU member states, especially the Nordic countries, already doing in terms of security policy? Shouldn't the Nordic countries in particular be given more voice in EU Arctic policy?
