From the 1st to 3rd March 2017 an Panafrican Parliamentary Roundtable meeting on Climate Policy and Legislation was held at the Pan African parliament in Midrand, in South Africa.

One of the full-agenda meeting’s goal was to examine which role Parliaments can play in contributing to, and meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

KAS presented its new regional program for Climate Policy and Energy Security for Subsaharan Africa, which was welcomed by the Pan African parliament. The parliamentarians expressed their interest to cooperate with KAS, especially in the assessment and the implementation of the legislation concerning climate change and climate policy. The discussions covered among other topics, the outcomes of the Paris COP21 agreement and the nationally determinant contributions/NDC’s of countries, whose reports show their effort to implement this agreement.

Professor Ruppel, the Resident Representative of KAS regional office, gave a presentation on the topic “Bridging Policy and practice: emerging body of knowledge on change legislation and potential role in climate changes response in the implementation of the Paris Agreement.”
