Transitioning towards a circular economy: opportunities and steps for Latin America

Final report

Latin America is taking its first steps to move towards this model that aims to achieve sustainable development, but how much do we know about the progress? Of barriers to drive traffic? Of the looming threats? Of the opportunities it gives us? These questions are precisely what we seek to answer from this study entitled Transiting towards the circular economy: opportunities and steps for Latin America, being a seminal work for the region.

Climate Protection made in Karlsruhe

The Federal Constitutional Court as an International Trendsetter?

The Climate Decision has attracted widespread international attention. To secure future freedom, the German state needs to pursue an internationally oriented climate protection policy with the goal of climate neutrality. International obligations from the Paris Climate Agreement and scientific findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) play a central role in the climate protection obligations that the Federal Constitutional Court has been drawn from the Basic Law.

In the Run-Up to the Climate Summit

Can the USA Set the Tone for International Climate Protection with its New Claim to Leadership?

The US President Joe Biden invited over 40 heads of State and Government to a virtual climate summit on 22 April 2021. The climate summit will be decisive for the future role of the US in international climate politics. Already during the electoral campaign, Biden declared climate protection to be a priority of his political agenda. How the US’ renewed claim to leadership in climate protection is being perceived worldwide is summarised below for the regions of Asia and the Pacific, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa, and the Middle East.

Latin American Survey about Management

CLIMATE CHANGE AND PUBLIC HEALTH

The scale of threats to the biosphere and to all forms of life, including humans, are so grand that it is difficult to comprehend them in many cases. COVID-19 showed us that we are not prepared to face global problems, including those associated with climate, which we have already begun to suffer and will continue to face.

Analysis of the determinants in Latin America

CLIMATE CHANGE AND PUBLIC HEALTH

The purpose of the study is to analyze the determinants of the relationship between climate change management policies and public health in Latin America, to promote integrated regional actions and to analyze proposals that contribute to the creation of transformations that lead to a resilient economy based on sustainable development.

2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development in the Latin American Context

This work is part of a wide and very successful cooperation project with the Center of International Law - CEDIN, and brings together essays of different methodological and epistemological nuances, of theoretical inspirations and plural practices that have as a common thread the decline of the notion of development sustainable in the Latin American context. The background is the 2030 Agenda, an instrument of global acceptance that has enshrined sustainable development as a paradigm to face the main contemporary challenges of humanity.

Mining on Indigenous Lands in Latin America: Development and the Environment

This work, carried out in conjunction with our partner CEDIN (Center for International Law), arises from the imperative need to thoroughly discuss mining in the indigenous lands of Latin America, taking into account, at the same time, the guarantee of indigenous rights and the much desired sustainable development. This is a sensitive and relevant debate not only on a regional level, but also on a global scale!

Country Reports with a Difference

Research on “Education of people with disabilities” around the world

People with disabilities are also among the most marginalised groups in the education system, and not only in the so-called developing countries. In recent years, it has become clear that education is one of the key prerequisites for sustainable development. Not least, the 2030 Agenda, with its guiding principle of “Leaving no one behind”, calls on us to focus our attention on this issue - also and especially in our work abroad.

What is the situation regarding access to education in the various countries in which we are active? To what extent do people with disabilities have the same access opportunities as non-disabled people? What difficulties do people face, what hurdles do they have to overcome and how can we, as a foundation, contribute to giving people with disabilities equal access to (‘civic’) education and to our programmes?

Our publication series “Country Reports with a Difference” aims to report on the current state of access to education for people with disabilities. Our overseas offices research the situation and developments in various countries. Through our reports, we can raise awareness of the inequalities that unfortunately still too often exist and bring more attention to the issue of inclusion.

Event Reports

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, its educational institutions, centres and foreign offices, offer several thousand events on various subjects each year. We provide up to date and exclusive reports on selected conferences, events and symposia at www.kas.de. In addition to a summary of the contents, you can also find additional material such as pictures, speeches, videos or audio clips.
