The forgotten problem - the rain forest in danger
KAS Brasil national report
While headlines about debates about the Coronavirus crisis dominate both in Brazil and Europe, environmental problems and especially deforestation of the rain forest remain almost forgotten. Deforestation figures for the first quarter of 2020 were recently determined to have increased by 50% compared to the same period last year.
The German government is in contact with both the Brazilian government and other relevant actors in that country, in a close exchange to preserve the rain forest and to ensure the sustainable use of its natural resources. Against this backdrop, it is worthwhile, especially in times of the Coronavirus crisis, to re-examine current events in the Amazon region to clarify the state of affairs.
