Climate Strategies (CS), Instituto Clima e Sociedade (ICS), Iniciativa Climatica de Mexico (ICM) and Konrad Adenauer Foundation’s Regional Programme on Energy Security and Climate Change in Latin America (EKLA-KAS) were part of the Organising Committee of the 4th Global Climate Policy Conference (GCPC). The 2018 edition took place on 16th and 17th of August 2018 in São Paulo, Brazil under the title: Harnessing Research for Climate Ambition and Transparency.

The aim of the GCPC 2018 was to identify and explore the challenges and opportunities faced as countries implement their NDCs under the Paris Agreement and transition towards low-carbon development. In her High-Level Opening Remarks, Izabella Teixeira, International Resource Council and Former Environment Minister of Brazil talked about the geopolitics of climate change and the importance of research-driven ideas that advance action on the ground.

From more than 100 abstracts submitted by researchers, around 10 were selected to present innovative ideas to foster implementation, and tools to support policy decisions at the conference. The presentations covered key issues relating to climate mitigation and adaptation worldwide; however, particular emphasis was given to topics relevant to Latin American countries:

  • MANAGING THE ENERGY TRANSITION
  • TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE AND RESILIENT CITIES
  • LEVERAGING FINANCE FOR CLIMATE AMBITION
  • ADDRESSING THE LAND USE CHALLENGE
  • GOVERNANCE OF NDC IMPLEMENTATION IN LATIN AMERICA
  • CAN GLOBAL TRADE SUPPORT CLIMATE POLICY?
  • INNOVATION IN RENEWABLE ENERGY POLICIES
