Jordan’s Shifting Interests with Syria and the Uneasy Road Ahead

Article by Suha Ma'ayeh | November 2021

This article discusses Jordan’s move to re-engage with the Assad regime, despite international sanctions. After 11 years of war and with the Assad regime still in power, Jordan began adopting a more pragmatic foreign policy towards Syria, driven by its own strategic interests; hoping to shore up its ailing economy and to limit the presence of pro-Iranian militias near its borders. However, the road ahead remains riddled with challenges.

A high-level peer-review process for future pandemic preparedness:

Practical lessons from the Universal Periodic Review Mechanism

This paper aims to draw lessons from the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) to inform a proposed peer-review mechanism anchored in the World Health Organization (WHO) focusing on emergency preparedness and recovery. As a high-level voluntary review, such a mechanism would add value through a global process of accountability and solidarity and ensure that health emergency preparedness is acted upon at the highest political level to strengthen health system resilience.

Key lessons to improve pandemic preparedness:

A short synopsis and comparison of the three main COVID-19 response evaluation reports at WHO and Member State level

This document analyses and compares the three COVID-19 response reports presented at the 74th WHA, focusing on their evaluation of the handling of the health crisis both by the World Health Organisation and Member States and their recommendations to end the current pandemic and prevent future pandemics. The analysis aims to synthesize common findings but also to highlight differences between the reports. It will provide a brief overview of the current evidence to a range of stakeholders, from policymakers to health practitioners, and can be a resource that can be used for ongoing discussions on WHO global emergency preparedness. Knowing which proposals are backed by consensus among the three expert committees, can provide insight into their effectiveness and chance for implementation.

The Nordic countries at COP 26 - lofty rhetoric, questionable ambitions

A KAS Nordics report from COP 26 in Glasgow

During COP26 we want to inspire faster, more ambitious action from all countries, and all of society, that will help us keep alive the crucial Paris Agreement goal of limiting global temperature rises to 1.5°C.” – Alok Sharma, COP26 President

UNCLOS and the Protection of Innocent and Transit Passage in Maritime Chokepoints

New publication by the Maritime Policy & Strategy Research Center and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Israel

Maritime straits – narrow waterways connecting two seas or other large bodies of water – play a vital role in maritime transit and in reducing the time of shipping. So called “chokepoints” particularly sensitive straits along some of the most important navigations routes pose unique challenges as they can become focal points for geographic, commercial, and political interests. Despite the guidelines set out by the 1982 United Nation’s Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), States can weaponize maritime chokepoints to advance political and strategic goals. Additionally, non-state actors are continuing to disrupt and threaten access and passage through straits and waterways. To strenghten UNCLOS' ability to govern global maritime transit, the extent of its challenges as well as tools to address them need to be analyzed. The Maritime Policy & Strategy Research center and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Israel are contributing to this analysis with a collection of insights from leading academic and legal scholars regarding the challenges to UNCLOS in the context of passage through chokepoints connecting the Arab Gulf with the Mediterranean Sea.

Building a Sustainable Partnership with the Citizen on Environmental Protection

This policy brief addresses the need to increase the participation of citizens in environmental policies through various mechanisms. Environmental protection and environmental problems are global responsibilities; thus, they require worldwide coordinated sustainable solutions. The improvement of one environmental governance indicator for a country does not necessarily translate into a better overall indicator. For instance, if illegal dumpsites are the problem, and if this problem is solved by relocating them from a developed to a developing country – the solution is not sustainable. To put it into context, such an unsustainable solution would mean moving waste from one room to the other room, while the problem remains under the same roof.

Keine klaren Verhältnisse in Chile

The Role of Free and Independent churches in the context of politics and society in Kenya

Religion and Politics

It is generally accepted that religious leaders should play a non-partisan role in influencing political processes. Moral and ethical debates suggest that while religious leaders should readily provide guidance and advice to political leaders, the former should not have personal interests in political matters. It is with this backdrop that KAS Kenya decided to do a study on ‘The Role of Free and Independent churches in the context of politics and society in Kenya’. The main objective for this publication is to strengthen knowledge among the Kenyan society, Religious actors, Legislators and Civil Society among other stakeholders on the level of engagement of free churches in Kenya especially on processes, challenges, emerging issues and priority areas in Kenya’s political landscape.
