Freedom of the press is an essential pillar of functioning democracies. When this pillar crumbles, it is usually due to an erosion of the whole democratic edifice, while also contributing to this ongoing decay. For many years, press freedom has been under pressure around the globe – yet, there are still grounds for optimism. The ­COVID-19 pandemic has helped to raise people’s awareness of the importance of independent, quality-oriented media.

Wahl ‘21: In Kanada nichts Neues – oder doch?

Es war die „sinnloseste“ Wahl in der Geschichte Kanadas, so sehen es seine politischen Gegner. Premierminister Justin Trudeau hat sein erklärtes politisches Ziel dieses Urnengangs, die absolute Mandatsmehrheit im Unterhaus – nicht erreicht, bleibt aber als Führer der nach wie vor stärksten politischen Kraft für eine weitere, seine dritte Legislaturperiode im Amt. Über 600 Millionen kanadische Dollar hat die Steuerzahler dieses politische Abenteuer ihres Regierungschefs gekostet – für ein neues Parlament in fast unveränderter Zusammensetzung. Seine politischen Probleme bleiben Trudeau daher erhalten – aber die seiner politischen Gegner sind nach der Wahl noch deutlich größer geworden. Beobachter deuten aber auch auf das Gute des Ergebnisses: Die Wählerschaft hat der Machtlust des Premiers einen Riegel vorgeschoben. Die in sich gespaltenen oppositionellen Konservativen müssen ein paar Jahre nachsitzen, um wieder mehr Gespür für die Mehrheit der Kanadier und ihre Anliegen an die Politik zu bekommen. Die Grünen bleiben zurecht bedeutungslos. Und für Populisten sind die Tore des Unterhauses weiterhin verschlossen.

Iraq ahead of the parliamentary elections on October 10th, 2021

Two years after the onset of nationwide protests in Iraq, early parliamentary elections are scheduled for October 10th, 2021. Although originally one of the central demands from the protest movement, many will probably boycott the poll. A radical change to the political landscape or even an overcoming of the ethno-confessional system in Iraq is not to be expected in the short term, but the election could still represent a directional decision: Will the country become a pawn of neighboring Iran or will it strive for an independent role in the region, whilst carefully balancing Western and Iranian influence?

Knapp ein Jahr vor den nächsten Präsidentschafts- und Parlamentswahlen in Kenia bringen sich die wichtigsten politischen Akteure des Landes in Stellung. Schon seit Monaten belauern sich die konkurrierenden politischen Lager, verschiedene Allianzen wurden bereits geschmiedet - nur um in den meisten Fällen kurze Zeit später wieder verworfen zu werden. Als zentrale Weichenstellung galt lange das erwartete Referendum zur vorgeschlagenen Verfassungsänderung der sogenannten “Building Bridges Initiative“ (BBI), dessen Durchführung jedoch vom Verfassungsgericht unterbunden wurde. Mit der wegweisenden Entscheidung bestätigt das Gericht einmal mehr seine weitgehende Unabhängigkeit.
