Brandkatastrophe und regionale Kooperation in Nordmazedonien

Die Hitzewelle in Südosteuropa hält auch Nordmazedonien seit mehreren Wochen in Atem und verursachte viele Brände im Land. In der deutschen Berichterstattung wird davon kaum Notiz genommen bzw. der Fokus auf das Nachbarland und EU-Mitglied Griechenland gelegt. Gleichwohl sind die Ressourcen, der Brandkatastrophe zu begegnen, in Nordmazedonien noch einmal knapper und das Krisenmanagement der Regierung ist verbesserungsbedürftig. Auf das mazedonische Hilfeersuchen reagierten viele Länder in der Region. Dabei werden jedoch leider erneut regionale Konflikte sichtbar.

One week after the preliminary apogee of the Belarusian provocations against Lithuania and the EU with a high number of illegal migrants at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border and verbal threats of possible terrorist attacks in Lithuania, the arrival of illegal migrants to Lithuania has initially stopped. However, this situation has led to consequences for the neighboring states of Latvia and Poland. Lukashenka continues to try to destabilize the situation. He wants to prevent illegal migrants from returning to Belarus. In a special session on August 10, the Lithuanian parliament made far-reaching decisions to deal with the crisis. It was decided to build a physical barrier and expand military powers. Not only the EU, but also NATO are now asked to provide support in the crisis.

In June 2020, Japan’s Ministry of Defense (MOD) abruptly announced it would abandon the Aegis Ashore deployment plan. Then, after twists and turns in policy coordination between the government and ruling parties, the Cabinet decided on December 18 to build two Aegis system-equipped vessels to replace the Aegis Ashore system. How will the shift from deployment of two land-based Aegis systems to construction of two sea-based Aegis system-equipped vessels impact Japan’s “comprehensive air and missile defense”? What are Aegis system-equipped vessels, and what should be their operational concept? Akihisa Nagashima, Member of the House of Representatives of Japan, offers his thoughts on these issues.
