While it would have been desirable to cover the country’s energy industry as a whole, this book focuses almost exclusively on Namibia’s electricity sector.

Die Begnadigung der katalanischen Separatisten

Am 22. Juni 2021 hat die spanische Regierung von Ministerpräsident Pedro Sánchez neun Hauptverantwortliche des Unabhängigkeitsreferendums in Katalonien vom 1. Oktober 2017 begnadigt, die zu mehrjährigen Freiheitsstrafen verurteilt worden waren, weil sie bei der Vorbereitung und Durchführung des Referendums gegen die Verfassung und mehrere Gesetze verstoßen hatten. Die Organe der spanischen Justiz haben sich einstimmig gegen die Begnadigungen ausgesprochen. Deshalb konnte die Regierung jetzt lediglich einen Teilerlass der Strafe durchsetzen, der an die Auflage gebunden bleibt, dass die Verurteilten in den kommenden drei bis sechs Jahren keine neue Straftat begehen. Sie dürfen zudem für die Dauer ihres Strafmaßes kein öffentliches Amt ausüben. Laut Umfragen hat die Mehrheit der Spanier die Begnadigungen abgelehnt. In Katalonien allerdings hat eine Mehrheit der Bevölkerung, darunter auch Bürgerinnen und Bürger, die das Ziel der Nationalisten einer staatlichen Unabhängigkeit ablehnen, die Begnadigungen begrüßt. Dort hofft man, dass der Gnadenakt dazu beitragen kann, den Dauerkonflikt beizulegen.

Donald Tusks Rückkehr nach Polen

Am Samstag (3. Juli) hat der frühere Premierminister Polens (2007–2014), spätere Präsident des Europäischen Rates (2014–2019) sowie amtierende (seit 2019) EVP-Vorsitzende Donald Tusk erneut den Vorsitz der polnischen Bürgerplattform (PO) übernommen. Seine Parteifreunde hatten seine Rückkehr bereits erhofft. Seit dem Ende der Amtszeit Tusks als EU-Ratspräsident war wiederholt die Rede davon, dass er eventuell nach Polen zurückkehren könnte, um erneut in die polnische Politik einzugreifen.

Economic Impacts of the Deployment of Renewable Energy Technologies in Namibia

This paper reflects on the economic impacts likely to be associated with the upscaling of renewable energy technology deployment in Namibia’s electricity sector. The discussion presented is neither comprehensive, nor definitive. Most aspects raised in this paper are qualitative and aimed to provide a high-level perspective rather than offer a detailed view. An in-depth quantitative analysis would be required to allow for more definite and tangible conclusions to be reached. Despite these limitations, this paper identifies several important economic indicators, which allow for a first assessment of the likely economic repercussions resulting from an accelerated uptake and use of renewable energy technologies in Namibia.
