The Wuhan-originating COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated a tectonic shift in the U.S.-China relationship. Meanwhile, given the international pushback against it, China can no longer discount the specter of international isolation and supply disruptions, which may explain Chinese President Xi Jinping’s new strategy of “dual circulation,” with its emphasis on domestic demand. Innenpolitische Krise in Georgien spitzt sich zu (Teil 1)

Rücktritte von politischen Ämtern sind auch in Georgien nichts Außergewöhnliches. Aber diese Ankündigung von heute, wonach der georgische Premierminister Giorgi Gakharia hinwirft, offenbart eine tiefe, strukturelle Krise. Die Begründung des PMs für seinen Rücktritt lässt einen Einblick zu in den fragilen Zustand demokratischer Institutionen in Georgien. Insbesondere die Gewaltenteilung zwischen Justiz und Politik steht zur Diskussion. Als Anlass für seinen Rücktritt nennt G. Gakharia die geplante Verhaftung des Oppositionsführers Nikanor Melia, dem Vorsitzenden der größten Oppositionspartei in Georgien, der United National Movement (im Folgenden: UNM). Ausdrücklich stellt sich G. Gakharia gegen die Verhaftung des Oppositionsführers. Dabei sind N. Melia und G. Gakharia gewiss keine politischen Freunde, im Gegenteil! Beide trennt nicht nur die parteipolitische Verortung, sondern auch eine handfeste persönliche Gegnerschaft spätestens seit den Protesten am 20. Juni 2019. Nun holten die Ereignisse vom Frühsommer 2019 den ehemaligen Innenminister und jetzigen Premierminister auf fast schon groteske Weise wieder ein. Er sprach sich jetzt gegen eine Verhaftung seines damaligen Gegners N. Melia aus!
