Africa’s future is urban and young: by 2050, the urban population in Africa will have tripled, the number of African megacities will have quintupled, and the majority of urban residents will be young people. For some, these are the most important challenges surrounding development in Africa. Challenges such as safety and security will become an important focal point. How can crime prevention and policing keep apace with such challenges? Will Africa’s urbanisation translate into a better and economically prosperous life for all, or is it set to increase violence, inequality and mal-administration?

Angesichts der starken Migrations- und Flüchtlingsbewegungen 2015 und 2016 kamen die 193 Staaten der Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen im September 2016 einstimmig zur Übereinkunft, dass aufgrund der Komplexität und Globalität der Phänomene Flucht und Migration internationale Vereinbarungen notwendig sind, die zum einen die Schwächen der Genfer Flüchtlingskonvention im Bereich des Flüchtlingsschutzes adressieren und zum anderen für den weitaus umfassenderen Bereich der Migration einen Rahmen für internationales Migrationsmanagement setzen.

Every Second Macedonian Doesn’t Believe in Media Independence

There is only little trust in the work of media in Macedonia: Every second Macedonian believes that journalists in their country can’t report independently. Furthermore, only one third of the population feels well informed about political topics. Generally Macedonians are informing themselves about politics from the TV. There is relatively high trust in the EU and NATO. These are the main results of a national representative survey commissioned by the Media Programme South East Europe of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS).

Ein eng mit dem Reformprozess Albaniens im Zuge der europäischen Integration verknüpftes Thema ist die Verabschiedung und Umsetzung einer umfassenden Wahlrechtsreform. Kaum ein anderer politischer Verhandlungsprozess bot in den Medien sowie in der Parteienlandschaft seit dem Sommer 2018 so viel Diskussionsstoff – und so viel Anlass zur Sorge.

Climate Change and Violent Conflict: Sparse Evidence from South Asia and South East Asia

The impacts of climate change are increasingly viewed as global security risks, which will have far-reaching implications for both human and renewable natural systems. Most climate–conflict research has focused on East Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. This SIPRI Insights explores and summarizes the findings from a systematic literature review of climate–conflict research on South Asia and South East Asia. Although these regions have been greatly affected by both climate change and conflict, there have only been a small number of rigorous academic studies that focus on the climate–conflict relationship. While this constrains the ability to draw general conclusions, there is context specific evidence that climate change can have an effect on the causes and dynamics of violent conflict in the region when: (a) it leads to a deterioration in people’s livelihoods; (b) it influences the tactical considerations of armed groups; (c) elites use it to exploit social vulnerabilities and resources; and (d) it displaces people and increases levels of migration. In acknowledging that these mechanisms are often interlinked and more noticeable in some climatic, conflict and socio-economic contexts than in others, the need for more research in both regions is clear.
