Domestic political developments before the parliamentary elections in au- tumn

Georgia's domestic political developments in the election year are to be assessed from various angles. After a turbulent year in 2019, the government was strengthened by the sovereign management in the Corona crisis, seemingly making up ground in the past few months. The opposition also sees their status strengthened after they have successfully negotiated demands connected with a new electoral system. According to the public perception, however, there is an increasing and questionable tendency to no longer make important political decisions in the parliament, but outside of it and, if possible, with international mediation. Recent developments also reveal that judicial independence is still fragile. The hope for the upcoming parliamentary election remains that it can be assessed as fair by all sides. The compromise regarding the electoral system created a good foundation for this.

On the 21st of May 2020, the national referendum on Myanmar’s constitutional amendments, already approved by Parliament, was put on hold. Amending Myanmar’s Constitution has been a topic of much debate since the formation of a National Convention in 1993, as it is key for profound reform in the country. In this paper, we will look at the history behind the amendment process, how it as carried out, the conclusion reached in Parliament and the expected impact it may have on the upcoming elections.

Während Bolsonaro inmitten der verheerenden Corona-Pandemie massiv unter Druck steht und an verschiedenen politischen Fronten kämpft, scheint es, als ob der Einfluss der Uniformierten in zahlreichen Politikbereichen weiter zunehme. So lohnt es sich, auch angesichts anhaltender Gerüchte bezüglich einer potentiellen Machtübernahme einen differenzierten Blick auf die aktuelle Rolle der Militärs in Brasilien zu werfen.

Charting Asia's path forward

The volume aims to examine questions surrounding the shifts occurring to the current multilateral framework and propose answers that can enrich current policy dialogues on free trade and the limits to multilateralism. Current developments and supranational responses to the challenges faced by the dominant multilateral trading system are discussed with special focus on the proposals for reforming the World Trade Organization (WTO). Asia’s role and country responses from leading economies in the region are also presented and discussed. It brings with it the need to revitalize multilateralism, upholding a cooperative international system that facilitates the achievement of common goals.

Además de las consecuencias para la salud de la crisis de la corona, los estados también temen las consecuencias económicas que tendrán los cierres nacionales. Para los aproximadamente 650 millones de personas de la región, la mayoría de las cuales trabajan en el sector informal y no pueden contar con ninguna protección estatal, la pandemia podría convertirse en una cuestión de supervivencia incluso sin altas tasas de infección.
