The Role Of the Security Agencies in Impoving Public Safety in Ghana

The role of the Ministry of the Interior (MoI) is the maintenance of peace, internal security, public safety and good governance cannot be over-estimated. The purpose of the workshop is to promote good governance and improve capacity in the security agencies.

Workshop Objective

The main aim of the project is to inculcate into personnel in the security agencies the role they can play in promoting good governance by effective and efficient service delivery and enhancing public safety in the country. The objectives of the workshop will therefore be the following:-

  • To remind the security agencies of their interdependent role in conflict and disaster management;
  • To brainstorm on some of the measures to nib in the bud the menace of armed robbery and other violent crimes;
  • To come out with some concrete measures to enhance public safety in Ghana;
  • To promote greater co-operation and collaboration among the personnel of the security agencies.

Justification

The issue of public safety has become so crucial in recent times that it affects the socio-economic activities, tourism and growth in the country. The most important problems identified in the country include the under-mentioned:-

  • Robbery;
  • Car snatching;
  • Rape and Defilement;
  • Road accidents;
  • Disasters;
  • Drug menace;
  • Fraud.

It is therefore important that the issues are well deliberated upon with the view to finding workable solutions to them.

Workshop Participants

It is anticipated that there will be about fifty participants at the workshop and they will be drawn from all the security agencies under the Ministry of the Interior and allied Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs). Delegates from other sister organisations such as the NGOs and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) will also be invited.

Peace and security are necessary conditions for sustainable socio-economic development and it is obvious that contributions from KAF have gone a long way in realising this. The sponsorship package which the MoI have had from KAF for the past few years has been beneficial and impacted on the performance of the agencies tremendously. It is therefore hoped that the continued assistance to the MoI and its agencies will be sustained.
