Launch of the John A. Kufuor Foundation

The former German Federal President Horst Köhler praised the aims and purposes of the new foundation

Following the invitation of the John A. Kufuor Foundation and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) the former German Federal President, his Excellency Prof. Dr. Horst Köhler, participated in the opening celebrations of the John A. Kufuor Foundation.

The newly launched foundation is based on the Campus of the University of Ghana in Accra (Legon). The foundation campaigns for democracy, sustainable market economy and good governance by the means of election observations, assistance with the enforcement of elections, conflict mediation and the strengthening of transparency.

Besides Köhler the former President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, participated in the opening ceremony.

A 1000 guests were present at the public lecture where H.E. Horst Köhler delivered a speech on the topic “Walking the Tightrope: Balancing State, Market and Society” at the University of Ghana, Legon in Accra. Köhler elaborated upon the basic principles of the social market economy as an important orientation guide for the economical, social and political development in Ghana and Africa at large. The former German Federal President pointed out the great success which Ghana achieved in particular under the leadership of the former President John A. Kufuor and also the on-going challenges. Köhler described the basics of the market economy as the inspiring principles to create a sustainable development.

During his two-day visit Prof. Dr. Köhler paid a courtesy call on the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, the former President of Ghana, John A. Kufuor, and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Ashanti King.
