Young politicians from Germany visited Athens

Under the slogan „Greece: The Unknown Neighbour - Politics, Society, Economics“, KAS Athens invited young politicians from Germany, among them two newly elected MPs, to Greece. The three-day dialogue programme was concerned with current political developments and the reform process in Greece as well as with the future role of the country as a European transportation hub.

After a meeting with young Greek politicians on the current situation in the country, the guests from Germany informed themselves about current political and economic developments in Greece. Kostas Lavdas, Professor for European Politics und Director of the Centre for Political Research and Documentation (KEPET) at the University of Crete, analyzed the Greek party system and gave an outlook to the European Elections 2014.

George Tzogopoulos presented the coverage of the debt crisis by Greek and German media. Christos Dimas MP explained the priorities of Greek foreign policy and the objectives of the Greek Council Presidency in 2014. Johannes Luchner, Deputy Head of the Task Force for Greece in Athens, gave an overview on the progress of the reform process in Greece.

The guests from Germany discussed with Georgios Koumoutsakos MEP the potentials of Greece to become a European transportation hub. Furthermore, the participants had the opportunity to visit the largest Greek container terminal, the P.C.T. in Piraeus, and to get into conversation with its Commercial Manager Tassos Vamvakidis.
