Bei den Landtagswahlen der indischen Bundesstaaten Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu und Westbengalen und des Unionsterritoriums Puducherry zeigte sich einmal mehr die Vielfalt der politischen Landschaft Indiens. Bemerkenswert ist vor allem der Sieg der BJP von Premierminister Modi im nordöstlichen Bundesstaat Assam und das erneut schwache Abschneiden der Kongresspartei. In Westbengalen machte sich für den Trinamul Kongress vor allem die Beliebtheit der Chief Ministerin Banerjee bezahlt, während sich in Tamil Nadu überraschend und erstmals seit 32 Jahren eine Regierung im Amt behaupten konnte.

Bei den zwischen dem 12. Oktober und 5. November 2015 abgehaltenen Regionalwahlen im nordindischen Bundesstaat Bihar erzielte das Wahlbündnis aus Janata Dal (United) (JD-U), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) und Kongresspartei (INC) einen klaren Sieg. Der Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), die nach Anzahl der Stimmen stärkste Partei wurde, gelang es nicht, die Wählerstimmen in Mandate umzusetzen. Nitish Kumar (JD-U) bleibt damit Ministerpräsident des nach Bevölkerung drittgrößten indischen Bundesstaats.
